Investors flee Carbonite after Limbaugh announcement
The Daily Caller ^ | 4/6/12 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 03/06/2012 11:46:54 PM PST by Impala64ssa

On Saturday, Carbonite CEO David Friend released a statement on his company’s website declaring that Carbonite had decided to “withdraw” advertising from Rush Limbaugh’s radio show in the wake of his controversial remarks involving Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke because it will “ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse”:

Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.

However, it hasn’t done much to contribute to his company’s stock price. Since the market opened on Monday through its close today, Carbonite stock (NASDAQ:CARB) has plummeted nearly 12 percent, outpacing the drop of the NASDAQ index in that same time period by nine-and-a-half points. It was also one of the biggest decliners on the NASDAQ on Tuesday.

You should keep your computer record on a backup drive, offsite.

Better to have them in two locations in the event of a fire.

There are fireproof and waterproof external hard drives available for home use. They’re pricey but you can’t put a price on 0bamabots in possession of your files. With 0bama as president, it pays to be paranoid.

What’s really scary about this ‘slut’ thing is the fact that it’s THE 0BAMA REGIME in conjunction with George Soros’ hit-squad organizations THAT IS STRONG-ARMING THESE COMPANIES INTO ABANDONING RUSH. That is the real story here, but let’s focus on the word ‘slut’ instead.

I have been poopooing all the wise guys that say they have their own backup, but that is worthless in event of a natural disaster or fire.

The best thing is to set up a data backup over your internet connection with a friend or relative. That way your backup is off-site.

Also, it is pretty simple to use a wifi connected HD to backup to a drive at a nearby neighbors home, or to a place like a detached storage building on your own property.

Everyone should keep firmly in mind that their data is worth far more than their computer hardware is.... you simply must back-up and secure that priceless data!

It would be workable to have two USB external drives, every month back up everything to one of them and then go to your bank and swap it for the other one in a safety deposit box.

Not really any more expensive than carbonite.

It's a shame that flooding is Asia cause the increase in HD prices... a 3TB drive cost much more than it used to.

It's easy to backup several GB worth of papers and family photos..etc to multiple gmail accounts...and it's FREE!

I canceled my Carbonite subscription last Saturday. I also emailed ProFlowers and told them very nicely where they could stick their flowers because I was now a former customer.

There are some free alternatives. I never signed up with them. I prefer to keep my backups in house, but I saw a thread that listed alternatives.

Anyone who thinks it's a good idea to trust their data in cyber-space is not thinking things through. Okay, theft and natural disasters are a reality. However, external back ups (think Maxon)that you can grab and run can negate that. In case of theft, just encrypt your important files and again, backup on your external drive.

When I first saw Carbonite advertised on TV, I thought what happens if the company goes defunct (which is looking likely)? I also thought what happens if they are hacked? Sheesh, NASA was hacked recently.

I don't get why someone would want their most important data out there in the new and great web-cloud on some server that hasn't been proven secure. Just my paranoid opinion. I'll keep my personal data on an external drive in my own home that only I have access to.

AlexW, Carbonite has always concerned me, and, given some of the work I do, would not satisfy security requirements of some clients. Off site backups are important, but depending upon a service is fraught with questions, particularly with young companies which are likely to either encounter cash flow problems, or whose owners are waiting to cash out, and have little reason to worry about securing your data.

I use the simple but robust Windows Backup facility, always backing up to physically separate systems. Most of us have more than one computer, and most desktop machines can be expanded to four, six, or eight drives. A terabyte drive costs well under $100. An outboard terabyte drive, plugging into USB-2 or USB-3 or E-Sata costs about $100. The software comes with Windows, and there are commercial products which have little more to offer, but will backup Linux/Unix/Mac as well, which cost between $50 and a few hundred dollars.

My approach is to backup daily, using Windows, which allows almost as flexibility as its daddy, the VMS backup facility from the father of Windows after NT, DECs VMS. DEC’s compression was proprietary, so Windows now uses the ZIP protocol. I copy the backup archive to an external drive and carry it to a locked room in the basement of our building.

But I have a few people generating lots of data. For $25 you can buy 32 gigabyte flash drives. Even 64 and 128 GB flash drives are coming available. Most people would be well protected by backing up to a flash drive, and putting the flash drive in a safe deposit box. You don't need to backup applications - just your working documents. Windows Backup lets you check off just your essential data.

Carbonite probably involves fewer steps for installation, but may be much less efficient at restoration. Consider how long it would take to completely restore a 500 GB system over a 3 megabit or 6 megabit serial link. You could be facing several hundred hours for a remote restore. When something happens, having the backup media under your own control can save lots and lots of time. You also know what is or isn't being done with your data.

For the ambitious, remote storage is available from a number of companies. If it isn't already available, access by individuals to encrypted private storage is coming soon, probably shortly after Windows 8 ships. Carbonite probably didn't have long to live anyway. An entrepreneur will provide a utility to transfer Carbonite archives to archives under your direct control. Citrix is a company which understands how to build such a utility, but they too have shown that ethical principles only apply to conservatives, since they and Carbonite advertise on programs hosted by mouths for whom “slut” is the norm when applied to Sarah Palin, or Laura Ingraham, or Virginia Thomas or .... The vicious left is about to discover that there really are more of us than of them, and that we belive in the 1st Amendment. We also believe in "choice", of backup services, flower vendors, mattress suppliers, and very importantly, who we would trust when looking for a loan or buying do-it-yourself will kits.

Sentry Save Company makes a fire safe with a mini-USB port in the door. Put a USB hard drive in the safe, and you have instant fire proof backup. I have the model QE5541 and it keeps my ammo and data quite safe.

Sam’s club has great cans of tomatoes called Angela Mia. They are packed in puree (like redpack) and the only canned tomato I’ve found in the south that makes good sauce.

I joined Sam specifically for those tomatoes.

If you ask me,allowing someone to copy all the files from your computer to a supposidly secure server somewhere is a stupid idea. Paying someone to do it is a really stipid idea.

Good post, Spaulding. I’ve been intimidated/lazy in the backup department and the whole “cloud” thing always gave me the willies.

I’m going to give it a shot now, if only to backup my photos.

Thanks.

The Internet is a weak link in the Carbonite backup approach. Either get in the habit of regular backups on devices that are kept off site, or get a fireproof hard drive. The latter may be difficult because I do not know the status or availability. You can set up your own wireless backup circuit. There are probably other options.
