Plenty of us knew that the Patriot Act was a mistake. Homeland Security was never implemented in a way justified by the Constitution. The feds tried to take away our freedom and they hoped that we would feel safer because of it.

I do not think that these acts done by any president could be looked upon as glorious as we are loosing our freedoms one by one and are mostly just yawning.

Freedom of speech, assembly, religion....life and death are up to bat here. Not a joke. Not paranoia. This is for real. We are facing a communist form of government where the state controls all and our constitution is being shredded and we are letting it happen.

There are a few differences. I think the Patriot Act was a knee-jerk reaction to a successful assault on US soil and while it was overreaching and plain, old unconstitutional, at least there was a reason.
It is now over ten years later and, though there is always a threat nowadays, there is no imminent threat. Why now? Is it the gradual progression of the planned takeover or maybe a safety net in case it becomes obvious that they will lose control in the election?
