Why Rick Santorum Should Stop Talking About Porn
Forbes ^ | 03/18/12 | Christopher Helman

Posted on 03/18/2012 7:42:17 PM PDT by Fred

Last week Rick Santorum vowed to end America’s “pandemic of pornography,” insisting that if he were president he would limit the rights of adults to show and view images of consenting adults having sex. No doubt there is too much pornography in this country, and anyone thinking of watching it should go read their Bible instead. But what I want in a president is a pragmatist, not a panderer.

It would have been one thing for Santorum to say that his real crusade is against pedophilia or against child trafficking. Those are real evils that must be stopped. But that’s not what he said.

Here’s why Santorum should stop talking about porn.

Santorum lacks instincts and vision, which causes him him to get bogged down and easily co-opted into bearing his soft-underbelly feelings on lightning-rod issues.

That, coupled with his lack of sense of proportion between societal ills and societal kills, leaves him a quart low in the common sense department. It's a huge red flag for me.

A freight train from hell is bearing down on us...and we're tied to the tracks. Rick is busy trying to untie the ropes...he doesn't think to use or carry a sharp knife.

He's not ready...and he doesn't have the instincts to take him to where he needs to be.

He's the opposite of say...Sarah. She has instincts and vision in spades. And she has a sharp knife and isn't afraid to use it.

You either "have it," or you don't.

So the media instead plays with Santorum like a cat with a mouse--flipping him up in the air at their pleasure.

I am a Christian, but I wish Santorum would stop being so preachy. Huckaby did that last go ‘round, and it did him in. America wants to hear about the issues, not religion, from a candidate. JMHO.....

Most folks think “Porn” is “Debbie does Dallas”...sorry, folks. It’s a lot worse than that. If you don’t believe me, ask your teenager, or your nearest gay relative...

Snuff films. Graphic stuff where the woman or young boy is degraded...

And then there is the “child” porn industry.

I had to stop HBO many years ago because it was full of nasty R rated movies showing men happily torturing women...

Better to watch women romping around happily with long dong silver than those R rated films...

again, excuse my language.

I’m pretty sure democrats made it so gays are in the military. So your winning platform is porn and rounding up gays and arresting them?

Why? When did self responsibility NOT become a conservative value? Not having a computer would solve the problem. Locking the computer with a password when/if kids are home alone costs nothing. The left continually argues that the government should take care of this or that so we don’t have to pay for it. Our children are ours. If it requires an extra expense, so be it. You can’t legislate morality, nor should you. That’s best left for the Taliban. You can TEACH values. Think about it...a government that can regulate what is viewed on the public Internet can decide who can be on the public airways as well. It’s a slippery slope. Besides, what do you do with porn that comes from other countries or whose servers reside outside of the US. Is he going to police the world?

Mitt really seems to have covered his bases here.

A presidential race takes more than a good candidate. A majority of us on The Free Republic would have the right values and positions to be a good president. It takes a lot more than that. It takes money, lots of it and the skill to raise a ton of it. Money and looks aren’t enough. Organization. I takes a great deal of organization. Newt has been in politics for ever but didn’t have enough organization to get on the ballot in Virginia. Santorum has missed a lot of requirements too. He will not be eligible for all the delegates in Illinois simply because he was not organized enough to have someone do the paperwork.

Don’t misunderstand me, the work to become president is daunting, you can’t do it without an organization behind you. Romney learned he wasn’t organized enough when he ran against McCain. Romney has not stopped since that election cycle. He has been campaigning since 2007. He has people working for him in every possible location, we’re talking about thousands of people. It takes committment, dedication, money and organizational skills to do that.

Obama had the organizational skills to beat Hillary, that didn’t make him a good president and the most organized and well funded has nothing to do with who is the candadate most like me. The candidate with the most money, the most people and best organizational skills will however likely be more effective in the office, for good or bad, than someone without those skills.

It is obvious that Romney wants this bad enough to devote the last 5+ years to it. I only wish that Michelle Bachman would have been so dedicated.

RE :”For starters, how about a return to Sodomy Laws. What’s wrong with that? All 50 states used to have them. And we were a better, more prosperous county then as well.

I have ranted scores of times here AGAINST that SCOTUS decision that was made by O Connor's swing vote. That was just a step in what led us to repeal of DADT today.
The states should be making their own sodomy and abortion laws without Federal interference.

However I sure don't want to be on the side that calls for a Federal sodomy law. I am consistent in my distrust of federal power.

I voted for Newt. You act like a petulant child, no wonder you want a nanny state. You can have the last word.

“You can’t legislate morality”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
I cringe every time I hear that. It’s a liberal lie. You can, you must, you will legislate morality.
Obammie, Sloe Joe, Hillary... they are legislating morality right now. As we FReep.
You can legislate morality. The question is.. WHO’S MORALITY?
Because you will not support a Federal sodomy law (assuming such a thing were ever proposed) you are opening up the door for Federal laws permitting gay marriages with penalties for any religion refusing to honor such perveted unions.
You think that day is not soon coming? You know it is.
WTF are you talking about? The Federal government permits states to marry gays NOW. It just doesn't recognize them and they shouldnt. No one has to pass a federal law permitting gay marriages. Its none of the Feds business. You are completely confused. Let the states determine their own morality laws.
Amen. Not to mention the Abortion holocaust.
I tremble when I consider that there is a just God in Heaaven who sees every sparrow fall...and ever innocent, precious child rent asunder in their mother's womb.
His judgement for such a hideous crime perpetrated by such a favored people will be harsh if we do not turn from this path.
And you ‘save the world from itself’ folks don’t realize that America will NOT BE HERE TO HELP THE REST OF THE WORLD IF IT IS CRUMBLED.
And there will still be porn.
Hell, there are ancient porn scrolls in China. Are they the downfall of American society as well?
Nah, that's too radical. That kind of idealistic advice sounds like it comes from some starry-eyed revolutionary or somethin'... :)
That’s the point!
Have you noticed that the Democrats don’t argue about morals anymore? They don’t have to!
They’re legislating the country to conform to their vision while you are worried about the church and homosexual marriage. Have you noticed that some states already allow homosexual marriage?
They have removed your First Amendment protection under Obamacare. They will do more.
They are out-legislating all of your arguments.
Handing your child a computer and internet with no controls (which are easily available to get) and then demanding that the Feds censor it to protect them for you is like handing your kid a loaded handgun with the safety on and then demanding federal gun control laws to protect him from it.
