Public opinion shifts on Trayvon Martin case
The Daily Caller ^ | March 31, 2012 | David Martosko

Posted on 03/31/2012 3:39:16 PM PDT by Cboldt

But just two days later, a national poll from Wilson Perkins Allen (WPA) Opinion Research determined that just 48 percent of Americans said police should arrest Zimmerman - a decrease of 25 percent. ...

In the WPA poll, 39 percent said they believe Trayvon Martin was "minding his own business" when he was attacked. Just 18 percent said they thought "Zimmerman was attacked" by the teen.

Not that polls should drive the outcome of the legal case, but it is quite interesting 1) that the issue was polled in the first place, and 2) how effective the media is at shaping opinion in the face of countervailing fact (in other words, the public is nearly totally gullible), and 3) with the poll shift, the media knows it's time to distract the people with a different issue.

The article has links to the poll questions, etc.

That doesn't "smell" real. In fact it has all the elements of a hoax.

If I were you, I'd refrain from spreading it around until verification.

Heh .. if those are accurate, you are right. Malice aforethought.

Seems a bit "pat" to be true. Easy enough to fake that twitter page, is it not?

Even without that, it is amazing how manipulable the public is - how trusting it is of a lying media. If the media had given a balanced presentation (which, in my opinion, it is incapable of doing, AND unwilling), there is no way 72% would have thought Zimmerman should be arrested in the first place.

a decrease of 25 percent. ...

That damn Constitution getting in the way again!

Now he will probably survive mob rule.

Something needs to be done about that constitution so we don't have time to change our minds and let innocent people get away and make a mockery out of Al Sharpton and the gang.

It just isn't fair.

And it also points out how the MSM decided to push this story.

With so many tragic events, shootings, crime stories, people being killed, why did the MSM hone in on this story, and decide to give saturation coverage to it?

There have been so many stories about this in the news, in magazines, on the internet.

Trayvon Martin is the cover story of People magazine this week.

Soledad O’Brien on CNN had her panties in a twist last night as she did a special on this case.

I think the media ran with the story because they thought it was a case of a white racist shooting an innocent young black man for no reason.

The name George Zimmerman sounds like a white man. In fact he’s Hispanic. So they decided to call him a white Hispanic to keep the racial angle alive in the case.

As many here have observed, there have been so many gang related shootings and killings, almost all victims and perpetrators black, yet they focus on this one rare case to convince us that the biggest threat to young black men is a racist with a gun.

In fact, the biggest threat to young black men are other black men with guns. But that doesn’t fit into the template of how America is racist and all of that.

I actually went to Sanford today around 1:30. They have a nice market downtown and it was as busy as ever. After some shopping I stopped in the grocery store next to where they were loading the out of town buses from the protest. Seemed to be a rather small crowd of mostly women. I think the actual citizens of Sanford are tired of the protesting and have just decided to get on with business as usual. I think the MSM is worried that people may start paying attention to Obama’s failures so they are desperately trying to create more controversy.

The MSM are full of rantings about the violence blacks suffer at the hands of whites daily -- hourly even.

There was change.. PC or no we're tired of letting them get away with the insults, threats, and lies.

The blacks screaming these lies -- like that MSNBC "reporter" ranting to what's his name, a white MSNBC reporter -- know but are too ashamed to admit the real source of their anger and embarrassment; to wit, fellow Africans and Arab Muslims hauling their ancestors off in ropes for sale to Europeans.

Then spending two-hundred-plus years before getting in position to be freed and then only because whites turned the slaves loose.

Though many American-born ancestors' of blacks had achieved freedom on their own long before 1865 the vast majority of blacks had to be freed by whites.

Perhaps the ones who escaped or otherwise got freedom mostly on their own -- perhaps they are the conservatives of today.

The ones flocking to Sharpton, Jackson, and other black radicals are the descendants of those turned loose by the white man in 1865. They are looking for special treatment and favors, hating the white man and hating blacks who "act white." They don't want to get along, they want to get even.

It won't be a violent-crime-based issue. The Trayvon Martin story is about to peter out, "old news" or "fatigue" being used to relegate further coverage to the classified ad section. Can't have the media mendacity shown by prominent correction.

Your guess is as good as any. Maybe some economic issue, or natural disaster.

That alleged screen-cap smells. It’s dated January 6th: more than a month and a half prior to the killing. Yet, he wouldn’t have been in Sanford at that time, he would have been at home in Miami. He was in a 5-day suspension when he was in Sanford. Assuming it was the last night he would be staying in Sanford, he couldn’t have arrived prior to Feb 21st: still a month and 15 days between the alleged tweet and Trayvon’s arrival in Sanford....

I don't think so. I think it's a more modern phenomenon. Communism, Marxism, leftism, progressivism - whatever, in many forms. There is an appeal to the worst parts of human nature, and unfortunately, PT Barnum (or whoever said it) was right - "a sucker born every minute." Here we have many lined up with a lottery mentality, "owed reparations," something for nothing. And Johnson's "Great Society" enabled that to grow and fester.

“With so many tragic events, shootings, crime stories, people being killed, why did the MSM hone in on this story, and decide to give saturation coverage to it?”

Obama’s internal polling shows him losing in November — BAD. It is the only explanantion. None of his base is energized enough to even want to go to the polls. Therefore, create a well-orchestrated race-baiting mock controversy and what do you know? The black man hates the white man, the liberals need to pretend they are in Selma with police dogs and fire hoses and Obama has energized his base.

No one gives a d@mn about some wannabe black hoodlum getting killed over a month ago — its an everyday occurence. Out of nowhere EVERYONE on the left is up in arms about a run of the mill shooting. It is the same feigned outrage we saw about some slut wanting free condoms. That didn’t work so they have moved on to the next make-believe controversy. Obozo certainly can’t run a record of achievement so he is throwing every left wing piece of crap he can think of to raise money (which he is not doing so well in) and energize his base (which would just as soon stay home come election day).

This is all about firing up and energizing a black community to get out and vote against whitey come November.

Obama hasn’t provided them with any jobs, he hasn’t saved their house from foreclosure, his promise of free health care is going down the tubes, if they don’t do something to fire up the minority base, he doesn’t stand a chance against republicans and white independents.

The “War on Women” kind of petered out so the Obama team has decided, when all else fails, play the race card.

Those are excellent points and absolutely they are super major factors!

I want to make clear however for anyone reading this but not reading my original reply.. I make a distinction between blacks who freed themselves before 1865 and those who did not. The former may be the ancestors of today's conservatives.

I was at Wal-mart today for the first time in nearly a month and what to my wandering eye at the checkout register should appear but a cover of People Magazine. There on the front was a pastoral looking picture with the picture of ten year old Trayvon Martin superimposed on it.

I nearly blew my cork... BLATANT manipulation of the facts. And it’s been like that since the story went mainstream. And the perpetrators will get away with AGAIN.

The first poll question was:

Based on what you have read or heard about this incident, do you think the police should or should not arrest George Zimmerman for shooting Trayvon Martin?

Permit me to translate:

Based on rumor and speculation by people who have an agenda on either side, without regard to whether you've confirmed any facts, and without establishing what the applicable Florida law is, and even though you may not be a Florida resident in which case your views aren't supposed to be represented by the acts of Florida legislators anyway, what's your unfounded gut feeling about whether police should or should not arrest George Zimmerman for shooting Trayvon Martin?

Yeah. That's an important journalist function Wilson Perkins Allen Opinion Research performed, you betcha.

-- Yeah. That's an important journalist function Wilson Perkins Allen Opinion Research performed, you betcha. --

And CNN, before them.

I certainly don't mean that the opinion polls have any bearing WHATSOEVER on the truth of the incident. They reflect exactly what you proposed as an alternative question; media influence on perception of reality.

It'd be one thing if the perpetually-pissed and other assorted people would shrug off the reports as "maybe true, maybe not." But here we have the president, presidential candidates, a substantial number of congress people, about 99% of the political chattering class touting a false reality; and dragging a good chunk of the gullible public along for the ride.

And Zimmerman is getting a raw deal. Really raw. As is the public.

Sorry but there is not one person in their right mind that will not cross the street if they see a young black male in a hoodie walking towards them, even though innocently,at night in an isolated area that will not cross the street to avoid him. That includes liberals, Democrats, conservatives, male, females, gays, straight, Republicans, media people, and yes, even Jesse Jackson. Profiling exists because the human mind reactively profiles when it senses a perceived threat, real or unreal.

Then spending two-hundred-plus years before getting in position to be freed and then only because whites turned the slaves loose.

Whites turned them loose, but not without a fight, i.e., not all whites wanted to turn the black slaves loose. In the decades leading up to the American Civil War, many white Americans fought bitterly over the issue of slavery. Many wanted to end it, and many did not. And whatever the cause of the Civil War, one thing is certain, the animosity between white Americans played out during the Civil War over this issue.

And those whites who wanted to maintain slavery, went on to become the Ku Klux Klan. And then the 20th century off shoots became the Neo Nazi's etc. Today, the Klan, which once numbered 5 million members, is but a vapor of its former self.

Progressive whites, along with black organizations, fought against these organizations. So, this is a credit to the white race. However, not all whites were in this camp, hence the large army of white hooded and robed soldiers that existed between the Civil War and the First World War.

The ones flocking to Sharpton, Jackson, and other black radicals are the descendants of those turned loose by the white man in 1865. They are looking for special treatment and favors, hating the white man and hating blacks who "act white." They don't want to get along, they want to get even.

Not sure I agree with that assessment. But opposing hatred from within the black community has to come from within. Imagine if the black community opposed the Klan alone back in the 19th and 20th century. It would have just swelled their (Klan) ranks. That's why people like Charles Mansion wanted a race war. It would have just swelled the ranks of the Klan to see other white men killed by blacks.

In some ways, this is something that has to be addressed by the black community alone. Any strong opposition against the Al Shaprtons by whites, will only swell their ranks.

That's why its important to bring in black investigators along side their white counter parts into this case. To get everyone's perspective.

I have a question. This story, and others I've seen, say that Zimmerman was a self-appointed neighborhood watch leader.

Does anyone have any evidence that this is true or not true? It makes it sound like he was some kind of a vigilante, as opposed to part of a group effort to stem the tide of crime in the neighborhood.

My impression, and I am going by vague recollection, is that George suggested to the neighbors that it form a neighborhood watch. I don;t what sort of meeting or vote, if any, was taken, but he isn't "self appointed" in the sense of nobody knows he's doing the chore, or that the neighbors don't want him doing the chore.

I also recall reading that at least some of the past incidents, where George helped catch crimes, were written up in the neighborhood or association newsletter.

All that said, I'll go look for some cites that correct my mistakes ;-)

Zimmerman's Twin Lakes Community Was on Edge Before Trayvon Shooting - The Daily Beast - Amy Green - Mar 28, 2012

For years, Twin Lakes residents had been on edge--demonstrated by their decision last September to start a neighborhood-watch organization, which was initiated by Zimmerman himself.

Neighbor comes to defense of Trayvon Martin's shooter - U.S. News - March 21, 2012

SANFORD, Fla. - A neighbor of George Zimmerman and fellow neighborhood watch captain in their Florida gated community came to his defense Tuesday ... Frank Taaffe pointed out the circumstances that he believes led his 28-year-old neighbor to react the way he did on the night of Feb. 26: Eight burglaries within 15 months, most done by young black males, he said.

Taaffe said that Zimmerman was appointed as a watch captain, despite reports that he appointed himself to the post.

Homeowners might be on hook in civil action in Trayvon Martin's death - Mary Shanklin - Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel - Mar. 30, 2012

Zimmerman was the point person for the subdivision's Neighborhood Watch. The September edition of the community's newsletter stated: "To receive Neighborhood Watch updates, safety tips and be noticed (sic) of any suspicious activity within your community, call George Zimmerman," and included his phone number, which has since been disconnected.

Self appointed in the sense that he piped up at a meeting, or otherwise suggested to the neighborhood association that a neighborhood watch would be a good idea, in light of the recent burglaries and hot breakins. As is not unusual when somebody suggests a task, they are also assigned it. I don't know how many others, if any, schedule time to watch the neighborhood. We do know he's not the only one calling the police. He makes about 10% of the calls from the community.

Since I’m a techtard, I have no idea, but War Chick said she’ll let people know if it’s a fake. So I’ll just keep checking her blog.

I showed her the ration tokens.

Small found red or blue OPA (Office of Price Administration) coins?

They were used as change for retailers to give back for food bought with ration stamps. They're made of vulcanized fiber (celluloid) and were commonly called OPAs.

The blue OPAs were change for processed foods and could only be used to buy processed foods; red OPAs were for meats and fats.

They came in different denominations (red "MM" OPAs were $5, the highest red OPA, and blue "WC" OPAs were $10, the highest blue OPA).

I have several sets of cufflinks made from OPAs in different denominations. People ask about them and they're a nice 'educational' item. They're quite inexpensive, the blues much easier to find than the red OPAs. I know places where you can get a full set of all 24 blue OPAs - including the rarer ones - for around $34-36. The common ones are under a buck apiece. A cheap price for a teaching tool for kids and grandkids. "Wait? That tiny, thin, round piece of plastic was money, and the only money you could use to buy food because the government said so one day? Cash wasn't any good? You mean the government can do that?"

I collected wooden money for awhile. The Tenino, Washington story is another good one.

The government is running a bigtime inflation / deflation racket against the people. Blame Congress, it is responsible to "coin money and regulate the value thereof."
