My first and worst concern was what is gonna happen with my kids, I had two toddlers, and I did not have any clue what is gonna happen, or even what is gonna look like when hell broke lose. We did not want to believe it could happen. We heard the sound of big guns miles away and stories of violence, rape and murder but everything looked so peaceful.
At the beginning, actually right before everything started during my meetings with my friends and colleagues at work we discussed the deteriorating situation, and pretty soon I found myself faced with important decision: is it worth to send my kids to some more “secure” region or to some relatives to neighboring country, or keep them with me, and wait what happens.
I never had question am I going to leave this place, I found it normal to stay in my city, with husband, in my house. Looking back now I know it was big mistake.
If I want to describe my worst feeling trough all of that, it was not hunger, danger, fire, cold or anything like that. It was definitely the feeling of uncertain future, complete absence of feeling that I control coming events, I was helpless and just like a leaf in a storm. Anything could happen.

Bosnia/Croatia? Selco was in a city that was shut off and under siege (Mostar??) for over a year(?). Pretty interesting web site that he has.
The other side of that coin, is, they will have a hard time finding me to start with and getting to me isn’t worth their being dead if they try. I have prepped since 1998. I won’t be seen if TSHTF and I won’t be underground.
Sorry I thought you was trying to be a wisea$$, I didn’t realize that you didn’t take the time to learn that Selco is a Bosnian and self admittedly only has rudimentary English skills. Maybe you can translate for him. You do speak Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian right?
Third group: people who know how to fix things.
Fourth group: people who are smart.
These two traits keep people alive and protected and there’s always value in that.

your 4th group is questionable. Certain kinds of smarts are more important than other kinds. Some kinds of smarts will be just plain useless.
Same goes for your 3rd group. When people are very busy killing each other, there quickly becomes a surplus of non-perishable stuff. People, food, fuel, and ammo become the most important but not necessarily in that order. Fixing things isn’t so important when its easier to kill someone and take his things.
Besides, how many people REALLY know how to fix things? I do. But in a SHTF scenario, lots of the things I can fix won’t be of use. What good is welding, wiring, and pipefitting skills when there’s no water, gas, or electricity? My old fashioned rigger’s skills may come in handy. Maybe. I can repair pumps and electric motors till the cows come home but I don’t see any value in that in SHTF.
That leaves basic carpentry skills. Hammer, nails, measuring&cutting, etc. Those are not rare skills. But what is rare is people who still know how to do these things without the use of electricity, pneumatics, hydraulics, and heavy equipment.
Who still has a collection of saws and planes and braces and bits? Who even knows the difference between a rip saw, back saw, cross cut saw, and a veneer saw? When’s the last time anyone used a saw set to adjust the pitch of saw teeth? or used a file or stone to sharpen a saw? Who knows how to build a scaffold out of nailed 2x4s? Or lift objects with block and tackle? Or even OWNS a damn rope for that matter much less knows any knots? People used to know how to figure the angles without using math. No one knows that stuff anymore.
These people are sufficiently rare that I would say they are irrelevant and will still be irrelevant in SHTF also.

I'm illiterate in six languages: does that count?
I do not want to see women as inferior to men - for my sake or my daughter’s. But the sense of entitlement (for many groups) and higher priority over the demographic that does many of the difficult jobs (soldiers, police, construction, farming) cannot stand.
Only if what hits the fan are a vast array of glitter nail polishes and the next generation of i-Phones. They have no basic lifeskills.

With over 30 years of martial arts experience encompassing both Okinawan and Korean styles, I’ll offer a little advise. Unless you’re planning on devoting 5+ years before you can be effective, (possibly never for Tae Kwon Do) skip traditional martial arts in favor of Krav Maga, or a similar purely self defense oriented style.
That said, weapon beats no weapon every time as long as you have the time, space and knowledge to employ it.
