The U.S. media failed in its coverage of the Trayvon Martin case and many other race-related events and issues, a panel of journalists recently acknowledged at a W.K. Kellogg Foundation gathering.
Roberto Lovato, co-founder of Presente.org, said the mainstream media is just ill-equipped to report on many complicated race-related factors in our society. Its embarrassing to watch the coverage.
Gregory L. Moore, editor of The Denver Post and moderator for the panel, questioned whether the pressures of a hyper-competitive, 24-hour news cycle contribute to the mistakes in coverage. For example, in the Martin case, the media initially reported that George Zimmerman was Whiteperhaps feeding into an expected stereotype.
Lovato and other panelists warned however, that the medias role in perpetuating stereotypes can foster racially-charged situations that lead to violence.
Dr. Gail Christopher, the foundations vice president for program strategy, called on the media to be more responsible in its reporting, especially as it pertains to vulnerable children and people of color.
We want the media to play a major role in helping to heal racial wounds, rather than contributing to the divisiveness, she said. There is an important role for the media to play.
Evelyn Hsu, senior director of programs and operations at the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, said one solution is to ensure more diversity in newsrooms and to allow more citizens to report on their communities.
Shirley Sneve, executive director of Native American Public Telecommunications, concurred, saying people of color need to utilize available technology such as the Internet to tell their own stories. For example, she said, Native Americans have high rates of suicide, obesity, violence against women and a high school graduation rate of 60 percent. And while those may be horrible news stories, they must be told.
We believe that Native Americans can tell Native American stories the best and so we spend a lot of time training Native Americans and allowing them to speak and be heard on the Internet, she said.
The meeting, held in New Orleans, was part of the Kellogg Foundations America Healing effort that provides grants for organizations to promote racial healing and racial equity to improve the lives of vulnerable children in communities.

The first step of recovery is being able to admit there is a problem.
And here's the real agenda after all 15 seconds of their self flagellation:
"one solution is to ensure more diversity in newsrooms"
Yep, "diversity" will stop Al Sharpton from Race Hating.
It ain't mistakes. It's deliberate deception and more and more people in the silent majority are becoming aware of it.
There was a story last week about 30 black women in a riot/brawl over a stupid facebook posting. The comments on the cBS news thread showed that people know about the deceptions and left-wing crusades in the media.
WHy they think the traditional media are dying???
The proper role of the media is to be a clear, unvarnished, unbiased, impartial reporter of FACTS. That's all.
So the solution to racist anti-white reporting is to have more people-of-color in the newsroom?
I’m not quite following the logic here.
“...is just ill-equipped to report on many complicated race-related factors in our society.”
Don’t forget that when dealing with liberals, he who controls the meaning of words controls the outcome of the debate. So, just exactly what the meaning of “race-related factors” in this sentence?
For example, we have a long string of examples in the media, where the race designation “black” was really code for liberal. For example, in October 1988, Nobel Prize winning poet Tony Morrison wrote an article in the New Yorker where she called Bill Clinton, the “first black president”.
Later, Time magazine’s Jack White calls Supreme Court Justice Thomas, “the scariest of all the hobgoblins”, saying “Washington seems to be filled with white men who make black people uneasy”.
CNN’s Soledad OBrien writes of a private meeting in 2007 with Jesse Jackson in her book, The Next Big Story. During the meeting, Jackson complained to OBrien, whose mother is a black woman from Cuba, that there werent any black anchors on CNN. She wrote, “He looks me in the eye and reaches his fingers over to tap a spot of skin on my right hand. He shakes his head. You dont count, he says.” She closed the section with “[t]he arbiter of blackness had weighed in. I had been measured and found wanting.”
In all these cases, and so many more that space constrains citing them, just what exactly is the meaning of “black”? In every case it is not about being black as a race, but being red as an ideology.
Until the media can be honest about what it means when it talks about race, it will never be able to honestly cover stories like the Travon Martin one. And the public will see the truth the media cannot bring itself to see.
The media's role is not to heal. The media's role is to report fact, without sensationalism and above all without bias.
That means reporting all crime in the same manner, regardless of the perpetrator's skin color.
Mistakes. So editing a tape is like dialing a wrong phone number?
The media is racist...which fully explains their mission in these stories.
Translation: In cases of violence, the FACTS on the "black" side will be softened, enhanced, or spun, all in its favor. The FACTS on the "white" side will be ignored, altered, spun or squashed, all to its disfavor.
We know on which side more "diversity" will jump. Do these moralizing journalistic eggheads think we're all that stupid?
= ACORN2? 3? 4?
IOW, never turn down a good marxist opportunity to separate stupid/naive/gutless caucasians from their cash.
“Dr. Gail Christopher, the foundations vice president for program strategy, called on the media to be more responsible in its reporting, especially as it pertains to vulnerable children and people of color”
Being “more responsible” in this context would be to tell the truth for a change:
(i) as to “vulnerable” children—tell them that hanging out all night with thugs, doing drugs, and refusing to use standard English will get them nowhere. Shooting basketball and “hanging” instead of studying chemistry and algebra will prepare you for a life in prison, but not success in life. If you want to be successful, act “asian”. (Not sure acting “white” will ensure success now days.)
(ii) as to “people of color”—tell them the truth. Though about 12% of the population, they commit a hugely disproportionate share of the crime in the country. There is endemic racism in this group. In 90% of the cases of violent crime involving whites and blacks, blacks are the perpetrators and whites are the victims. You have to realize and acknowledge the problem of violence, racism, and hate in the “people of color” population to do something about.
Don’t expect a lot of sympathy or empathy from other groups who are trying to teach their children to be good citizens and who are tired of supporting nonproductive segments of the population.
And as for the media—you are despicable agents of this problem and justly deserve the ridicule you receive.
I wish FR had a "Like" button.
The media is ideoist. They consciously discriminate on account of ideology, to the deliberate exclusion of anything except conservative.
