I sincerely apologize for taking up so much time from fellow FReepers, but now my computer is acting up. I'm hoping I want have to have the thing wiped clean and Windows reinstalled, but I am not a tecchie and have no idea what to do.
My problem is with one of those frequent and usually welcome security updates heralded by the little yellow shield with the exclamation mark. I got this earlier today and it told me three updates were ready to be installed. So I installed them.
Problem: the little yellow shield comes back on every time I log on the computer with the same three updates. Similarly, every time I log off it "installs" the same three updates. It does this over and over and over and over and OVER. How do I clear this out of my system? How do I install them for good and all or else make the shield and the installation-on-exit cease?
Please use non-technical English as much as possible.

Well, you can log onto Free Republic, so what else could you possibly want your computer to do???
please post the kb numbers, failures to update can be tricky, but do not wipe. some times odd things happen. first thing to do/try is run check disk, run defrag, delete all temp files(not folders). If you have a registry cleaner run that. feel free to hit me private, BTW post the os xp/vista/7.(32/64) Vista and 7 have some built in error fixing tools that could help.
Strange update, like one of those where each has to be installed separately, rather than all-in-one. In the past those usually came with manually downloading/installing the updates through Microsoft Update, unusual though with auto-update.
Same here. I rebooted after about the third or 4th time and it went away. (windows XP. 7 year old machine)
Techies will need more information, specifically your operating system (Windows 7?) and the specific updates, but this is probably not a problem. Next time watch at the end of installation and see if it says: “Some updates could not be installed”. If so, look up the update that is not installing, such as “Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1” (that is a security update, and you should at least try a little harder to install it) and see what they do. You can try installing them from Microsoft.com directly or installing other updates from Microsoft.com to see if one of them allows your newer updates to install correctly. Do not re-install Windows to fix this unless you have extremely valuable information on your computer - just wait for Microsoft.com to get their act together if the updates won’t go in with a reasonable effort now.

Thanks to MestaMachine, whose advice I followed and found to be good. I’m hoping I won’t see that thing again (though I haven’t rebooted since). I also hope that the updates really did download properly one of the times I logged off and it told me they were downloading. I don’t like to miss security updates.

I have a question also of you geeks.....I started up my laptop today and now the wireless don’t work. I believe it has been disabled but how and what do I do to get it enabled again? Please and thank you!
first to the thread, noticed that I had the issue as well, ran windows update, got no updates, still had 4 updates in the yellow shield. ran the updates in the shield, got failures, rebooted and bingo, gone. rerun updates from both the win update and shield and post if you still have issues.
On wireless, lots of potential issues, post system model, adapter, is there a problem icon in the lower right taskbar and or device manager. do you know what program manages the wireless connection?
I have the same thing right now, installed them once already, but I expect it to go away after a shut down.
I will then manually check for updates next time I start up, just to be sure.
I just hope 1)they really download one of the times they said they were, and 2)I continue to receive updates in the future.

Do you have the ‘bars’ icon showing in the lower right system menu bar?
If so, click on it. It should show the option to ‘connect’ to your network.
Otherwise, click on the Open Network and Sharing and try to troubleshoot.
Go to the windows update website and install them from there.
You can download Belarc Advisor to see if your system is up to date.

There could be a switch for wireless either on one of the function keys like F10 or could be a toggle on side or front. This has happened to me and I always think it’s worse than it is.

Hit it with a sledge hammer and re-boot....
On many computers there is a switch, on the side, which can be used to turn your wireless on or off.
I have two laptops that have that feature and each one had me up in arms until I noticed it.
Now when the things won’t catch wireless I check to ensure the switch is in the on position.
Pay a 12-year-old boy to install Linux. :-)
