Why is it wrong for Joe the Plumber to go by his middle name?

Posted on 06/23/2012 1:51:59 PM PDT by EveningStar

Joe the Plumber recently resurfaced in the news. It reminded me of something that occurred to me when he originally became a national figure.

As you know, his full name is Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher. Most of us know people who have gone by their middle names. Some of you here probably go by your middle names. Three presidents went by their middle names: Stephen Grover Cleveland, Thomas Woodrow Wilson, and John Calvin Coolidge. And of course, Willard Mitt Romney is a presidential candidate.

However, we've had media folks and others saying "His name's not Joe! It's Samuel!"

I'm not a fan of Joe the Plumber, but I have to ask, why is it wrong for him to go by his middle name?

Because Sam the butcher is already using that name.

Floyd is taken as well.

Easy. Because HIS NAME is not "Hussein", it's "Barack!"

And Bob Kerrey’s first name was Joseph. And Mitt Romney’s first name is, of course, Willard. Nobody thinks those two are phonies (well, at least not because they go by their middle names). What’s the problem?

Poor Joe

The MSM spent more time investigating him in 2008 than they did Baraq Obama.

"Joe the Plumber" is a nationally recognized brand name, and state-controlled media wants to deprive him of its use because it is so effective.

Wrong by whom? The MSM? The MSM is a media meme conspiracy. So put on your conspiracy hat.

Joe vs. Samuel.

Everyday Guy vs. Jew

Which one do Democrat conspirators think will sell worse in Peoria?

That's how they think. Racism is bad for you and me - for them, it's BIG business.

Two of my sons use their middle names: Allen Patrick “Pat” and Jonathan Francis “Frank.” My great-uncle Leon James was called “Pete,” for no reason I ever heard.

Pure ignorance.

I go by my middle name and first initial not because I’m a wannabe snob but because my parents always called me by my middle name. Then as I got older people wanted to know my middle initial. It got to be a pain to explain to them I actually had a first initital. To prevent the problem I just started signing my name with the first initial. When I asked my mother why they didn’t just put the name they were going to call me first she said, “We just didn’t think it sounded as good that way”.

Years ago I had a girlfriend named Johnene, both her brothers and father were named John. The youngest brother went by his middle name. My name is John too BTW.

My dad’s name is Harold Arthur but he answers to Bud.

I always thought if you had two or more "first" names you could freely choose any of them as your preferred call handle.
I was completely unaware that there are anti-snob rules we have to look out for.

Years ago, the name John was common. At one point my family had 19 members named John. Some go by nicknames, others by their middle names. Otherwise, the rest of us couldn’t keep them all straight.

I used to have an English teacher who would say, it's your name. If you want to spell it SMITH and pronounce it JONES, it's your choice. I guess the same would apply to people with a middle name as well. Choose the one you want.

Barack used to go by "Hussein," but that was obviously not the best name to go by after 911, so he switched to "Barack," hoping (justifiably) that most ignorant Americans would have no clue of its significance.

... lots of Amish have koranimal names...

I think it’s anti-Semitic. Sam Wurzlebacher sounds Jewish, so if he goes by his first name, his opponents are hoping that voters will be turned off by him because they will think he’s Jewish. That’s my opinion.

His name, his business.

Ding Ding Ding !!!!

We have a winner. LOL !!!

You address a man by whatever name he wishes to be called.

If Wurtzelbacher wants to be addressed as Joe, that’s his prerogative. It is legally his name.

Joe the Plumber, or Sam the Plumber...I’m glad he’s back speaking out. He gave Sid McCain momentum, but Sid virtually campaigned for 0 by the end.

As a Junior I was always called by my middle name - let’s say - Harold to differentiate me from my father - let’s say - Thomas in our family while growing up and around our little town through high school. But in college and then the military it became confusing and probably actually insubordinate to reply to constant requests for “First Name, Middle Initial” with T. Harold - not to mention that it sounded pretentious as all getout. Eventually I gave in and now go by Tom H.- let’s say. Only trouble is I met my wife after the switch, so I have to remember when I’m dealing with my family I’m Harry, and with hers, I’m Tom - just one man’s opinion......
