A lot of like-minded people who think a collapse is coming seem to have some pretty naive ideas as to what they will do after the collapse. They seem to think they’ll be able to pick up a rifle, head out into the woods, and live off the land. If that is your plan I urge you to try it now! Spend 7 days out in the wild bringing your gun, your bug-out bag, and anything else you plan to use to live off the land.
Chances are you won’t like it very much. We are really too used to our current level of technology and shy away from moving back to more “primitive” thinking. This has been a HUGE adjustment for my wife and I. We thought we were pretty tough but discovered that living the life we want is tougher. Every day we try new things and improve on them so when the time comes, we’ll be ready. Not just making “plans” but ready to go.

There is little doubt that trying to live off the land artificially is significantly more difficult than it would be under true life and death circumstances.
Psychologically your mind incessantly tells you that “this is stupid, just go get a Big Mac.” On the other hand, choosing between eating tree bark or dying provides significant incentive to eat tree bark to survive.

I don’t think our lifestyle will change much. I’ll have no gasoline for generator, so nomore tv or computer. But we live way back in the mountains now so not much of a change. We grow most of our veggies and fish out of stream. Artisan well supplies all our water and there are plenty of deer, turkey, squirrels ect, We are also well stocked on things that go boom.
This is someone who lives in an urban/suburan area. Tell them to move out to the boonies, where services ar far and few between, where the electric service is as reliable as the weather, and just as fickle. This writer wouldn’t know which end of a rifle to point at dinner, let alone have any skills at finding dinner. All of the technological advances that we enjoy are roughly about a century old, yet all of the people who lived before those advances still managed to get along just fine without them. One thing a prepper would have to keep in mind is that if the commercial and public infrastructures would collapse, the government and military ones would not. If one were inclined to overthrow a nation, the first targets would be the communications and utility infrastructures, and our military has the tools to do that with ruthless efficiency. Destroy modern technology, and the country quickly falls apart. The only way this country can be destroyed, is from within.

I strted my international living in 2000, spending part time in Central Europe.
In Jan 2005 I moved to Slovakia for full time.
I made good money as an English conversation tutor, working about 20 hours per week in various businesses and banks.
As Europe started sinking, I left in Jan 2009 and moved to
the Philippines, where I have a very nice spot on a beach, living nicely on social security.
Even if Social Security crashes, I will still be able to survive here.
My total cost of living for me, my girl, and our 15 month old baby boy is about $750 per month.
No need for a car here, as I travel the entire town by bicycle, and for long distance, I can catch a highway bus within ten min.

I read the International Living blog which cocentrates on central/south America.
I see that expats are quite happy in those countries.
I think one of those would be my second choice if I had to bail out of the Philippines.
