The Muslim holy month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar when the faithful believe that the Quran was revealed to Muhammad. During the month healthy Muslims must fast during daylight hours and increased prayers and recitation of the Quran. There is a theory that during Ramadan the stress of living a more hyper-religious life has been an underlying factor that may have caused Muslim Afghani soldiers to murder non-believers on their soil. Never mind the fact that most of the foreigners killed by their own hands were there to train them to fight for their own freedom from the Taliban.
Many Afghans see the presence of American and NATO troops whom they regard as a bunch of barbarians as an affront to their local customs and religious way of life. During this past Ramadan alone 10 American troops were murdered by so-called friendly Afghan forces. Not admitting the real problem: the increase of insider attacks result from Ramadan fever is a mistake. There is no proof that the attacks were conducted by a foreign government. More likely than not the attacks were committed single individuals acting on their own. The Taliban have, of course, been quick to take credit for these murders but there is little evidence of their actual involvement.
Retired Army Colonel John Agoglia, an Afghan vet, pointed out that during Ramadan Afghan troops can be testy and irritable while fasting. The Colonel said that most of the Green on Blue murders were the result of person grievances against non-believing foreigners. In other cases the murders were committed for no particular reason.
