Anti-Americanism In Canada

One of the most deplorable habits still spreading amongst Canadian liberals seems to be anti-Americanism. The saddest thing about those who spout anti-Americanism is that their views aren't rebellious, original, or remotely unique. In fact, their views only exhibit their insurmountable ignorance and the nonsensical and hypocritical nature of their conformity. Canadians who proudly display their anti-Americanism in public and in private conversations haven't only failed at making themselves look intelligent, they've failed to provoke anything but laughter and ridicule from rational Canadians. The nature of anti-Americanism in Canada has no roots in logic, nor does it have any place in a country that's culture, military, and economy depend so strongly on decisions that are made south of our border.

What we're talking about here isn't mere anti-Bush or anti-war sentiment. What we're talking about is relentless, abrasive, and acerbic stereotypes being spewed from the mouths of ordinary (mostly liberal) Canadians on a regular basis, in conversations, on television, and in literature.

Canadians are the best friends Americans have, period. They will go to the wall for us long before Israelis or Brits.

Remember who risked their lives, hiding our diplomats that weren’t taken hostage in Tehran? Not the Brits or anyone else.

It was the Canadians. They made our diplomats Canadian citizens with fake ID’s and smuggled them out.

I have friends all over the world. My trust in Canadians is automatic, can’t say that about anyone else.

Although, it is not possible to have more fun in a bar than with Aussies.

Nah, it’s University of Washington. My cousin on my mother’s side played for U Wisc on their hockey team though, and same with my other uncle for Miami of Ohio.

I’m an Englishman and I encountered more anti-British sentiment when I lived in California...

Ah, the good ol' People's Revolutionary Soviet of California. Were you in the vicinity of Berkeley, perchance?

My only contacts with Canadians have been in grad school and on FR. Even the lefty Canadians I met in grad school only seemed to exhibit good-natured ribbing regarding the US (namely, US pop culture and American beer were the targets). I know that Canada has their jerks, but I haven’t personally met one.

Well, since my wife of 25 years had the poor grace to die unexpectedly a couple of years ago our Canadian sister site, Free Dominion, has welcomed me and put up with my daily pointless blatherings of my daily life.

There are a lot of good people in Canada- and some knuckleheads, just like we have here.

“In fact, their views only exhibit their insurmountable ignorance and the nonsensical and hypocritical nature of their conformity.”

Some 4 decades ago, I was a student at a northern US university (bordering Canada). It never ceased to amaze me when I would hear the Canadian hockey players,ON SCHOLARSHIP, bitching about what a “raw deal” they we’re getting in the States.

For some reason, I have long been fascinated by Canada. I have spent a lot of time communicating with Canadians on another forum, especially about politics and culture. I often find that Canada and the United States are so close and yet so far. For example, “Conservatism” and “Liberalism” mean different things in Canada than they generally mean in the United States. One Canadian on the forum even opined that the United States is MORE socialist than Canada! FWIW, I am a “red stater” who finds Canada more liberal (as Americans understand that word) than our “bluest” states.
