Who Knew Stephen Colbert Was a Faithful Christian?
The Christian Diarist ^ | September 17, 2012 | JP

Posted on 09/17/2012 6:32:47 AM PDT by CHRISTIAN DIARIST

I’ve never really cared much for Stephen Colbert, whose cartoonish portrayal of a conservative political pundit has earned his Comedy Central show, “The Colbert Report,” three Emmy nominations from his politically liberal Hollywood peers.

But I discovered this past weekend that there is more to the comedian than I previously thought; something that even regular viewers of his satirical “news” show would find surprising.

Colbert is a man of faith.

A lifelong Catholic, the funnyman told an audience of some 3,000 students at FordhamUniversity, a Jesuit institution in the Bronx, New York, “I love my church – warts and all.”

I found particularly interesting a remark by Colbert that alluded to the familiar Scripture, “the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

The church, said Colbert, teaches joy. And joy, he said, is the “infallible sign of the presence of God.”

Colbert, a family man, a faithful churchgoer (who even teaches Sunday school at his New Jersey parish when his schedule permits) appeared at Fordham alongside New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. They teamed up for a panel on humor and spirituality.

“If Jesus doesn’t have sense of humor,” Colbert joked, “I am in huge trouble.”

Yet, for all his seeming irreverence, both on and off air, the comedian takes his faith seriously. That is a testament to the Christian values his mother imparted to him at a very young age.

“She taught me,” Colbert told The New York Times earlier this year, “to be grateful for my life regardless of what that entailed, and that’s directly related to the image of Christ on the cross and the example of sacrifice that He gave us.”

The future comedian’s mom also prepared him for the vicissitudes of life faced by believers and non-believers alike. “The deliverance God offers you from pain,” she told him, “is not no pain. It’s that the pain is actually a gift. What’s the option? God doesn’t really give you another choice.”

That’s rather profound thinking for a guy who tells jokes for a living; whom I dismissed as a typical Hollywood liberal hostile to political conservatives, contemptuous of faithful Christians.

I’m glad I was wrong about Colbert (at least with respect to his views on faith). I might even find time to tune in to his show.

I've seen his "show" a few times and you could've fooled me, and it wasn't even very funny. I guess he must belong to Rev Jeremiah Wright's church, along with Hussein.

Sorry, but words mean squat.

It’s your actions that declare your Christianity, not your words.

Colbert is no more a “Christ”ian than Obama is, despite both of their proclamations of being Christians.

Must spend a lot of time in the confessional. I seem to remember the Bible having some rather pointed things to say about bearing false witness...

I am not sure I would have used that word.

Pelosi is rumored to be Catholic too- but seems to have no problems with baby murder.

Yeahhh, don't bother doing that, it's Hesh Lite, which is basically the CO2 inside the bubbles...

Obviously a cafeteria Catholic.

It is impossible to serve two masters and Colbert’s #1 priority is obviously to further the goals of the very anti-Catholic Democrat Party.

True that. If his TV ratings ever dip this guy is going to find himself doing dinner theater in Boise.

Very good point. "Faith with action" was part of the scripture readings this past weekend. If Colbert is Catholic, he does not appear to show the importance of his faith within ANY aspect of his work, the few times I've seen him on TV. His tone is derisive, mocking, and anti-Christian.

The title is the testimony. Not sure how many sermons I've heard where the pastor asked if someone accused you of being a Christian would there be enough evidence to convict you? Based on the headline, Colbert is safe.

sorta like Jason Biggs...no not Jewish either

i’m not Catholic but those who support the abortion party would appear to be apostate to me

which goes back to they ain’t “diddly”

I think Good Works Christians fit that bill but here in Dixie folks who got to church regularly are disproportionately likely to be conservative ...if they are white.

Blacks can live at church all day Sunday and still vote for this years 40 acres and a mule

My homestate is maybe he most church attending in the country and whites vote almost 90% GOP

that would be the Magnolia one....famous for the wordy alcoholic

Never watched the other guy either, the other comedian who pretends he’s a journalist.

Colbert is the worst of the bunch. At least Bill Mahler admits to being an athiest when he starts his putdowns of all things Catholic. Colbert on the other hand claims he’s a good Catholic and “loves his church, warts and all”, but openly advocates for sodomite “marriage”, and abortion of any kind. He claims his Catholic parents told him years ago he could be a Catholic, but could also “question” his church. Well he’s right. You can question the morality of the death penalty and what time Mass is going to be, but you absolutely can not question and deviate from the teachings of the church on homosexuality (sodomite marriage), and abortion. These are non-negotiable moral truths of the church. If Colbert or any other “catholic” says they believe in this grave immorality, and it’s “OK” with the Church, he is either a complete idiot or someone that knows absolutely nothing about the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I think he knows the teachings of the church and could care less. In other words he’s the biggest hypocrite this side of the moon. So when he talks about “warts” in the church he’s describing himself and the other cafeteria catholics that should be excommunicated for causing great scandal in the church.

I agree that supporting abortion is evil but I don’t understand how it is then OK to support a pro abortion candidate. Romney has always been pro abortion and promised he “Would NEVER infringe upon a woman’s right to choose’.He donated to Planned Parenthood. He tried to force Catholic hospitals to do abortions. He implemented free tax payer supported abortions. The GOP platform means nothing when the candidate actions and statements are totally opposite. Is Romney a man of his word? Should we believe what he said, then, now or wait to see what he says in the future.

John Derbyshire points out that the religious folks are as likely to be left-leaning in their political beliefs as they are to be conservative — in some cases, moreso....

That is shown to be false by all voting data, the number one indicator of how people vote is by their level of religious devotion, the left is made up of the non religious, the right is the most devotedly religious portion of the population.

What false witness would you say that he bears? I don’t think satire or sarcasm count as lies. Neither does expressing opinions that other people disagree with, for that matter. It’s not false witness any more than saying you like the seahawks. Political opinion is opinion, right?

I’d like to hear your sources, because you are blatantly wrong. If you’re going to make a claim that a published, reviewed and sourced author is wrong, you’d better be able to back it up. Otherwise I’m going to assume your “data” is confirmation bias and wishful thinking.
