Wanted: 'Adventurous woman' to give birth to Neanderthal man-professor seeks mother for cloned baby
The London Daily Mail ^ | January 20, 2013 | Allan Hall and Fiona Macrae

Posted on 01/20/2013 9:06:48 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

They're usually thought of as a brutish, primitive species.

So what woman would want to give birth to a Neanderthal baby?

Yet this incredible scenario is the plan of one of the world’s leading geneticists, who is seeking a volunteer to help bring man’s long-extinct close relative back to life.

Professor George Church of Harvard Medical School believes he can reconstruct Neanderthal DNA and resurrect the species which became extinct 33,000 years ago.

His scheme is reminiscent of Jurassic Park but, while in the film dinosaurs were created in a laboratory, Professor Church’s ambitious plan requires a human volunteer.

He said his analysis of Neanderthal genetic code using samples from bones is complete enough to reconstruct their DNA.

He said: ‘Now I need an adventurous female human.

‘It depends on a hell of a lot of things, but I think it can be done.’

Professor Church’s plan would begin by artificially creating Neanderthal DNA based on genetic code found in fossil remains. He would put this DNA into stem cells.

These would be injected into cells from a human embryo in the early stages of life.

It is thought that the stem cells would steer the development of the hybrid embryo on Neanderthal lines, rather than human ones...

A Neanderthal in his/her terrible twos would be a challenge.

But give some thought to a Neanderthal teen.

Nope, nope, nope...will not volunteer for this no matter how much money is involved. Even if I could, I’m just not that adventurous.

Given that modern humans kicked Neandertal @$$ and took names, it might be safer to raise a Neandertal. I'd take a feral, rabid bear cub over my first-born.

Humans are dangerous.

What could go wrong??

First off, "Neanderthal man" is an oxymoron:

What Neanderthals actually looked like (6" ice-age fur coat removed for demonstration purposes...):

“modern humans kicked Neandertal @$$”

Actually, it is looking more and more like Neanderthals and Cro-Magnon simply merged. Europeans are 3-4 percent Neanderthal, and the Neanderthal population was one tenth or less the size of the Cro-Magnon population at the time of the ‘event’.

Naaaa,, they didn’t look anything like that. Thats some kid who has that comic book, satanic, heavy metal, death fetish idea of what they looked like.

I have a book about cavemen from the early 60s. They were just regular dudes with a little more muscle and forehead. And they were always hooking up with cro magnon chicks. So this caused conflict, and we used our brains to kill them all.

The chicks were the cause of it all.

Neanderthal DNA is about halfway between ours and that of a chimpanzee, what do you expect them to look like?? Vendramini has basically nailed it.

This is really silly.

To my knowledge, while we may have the ability to sequence DNA, we are a looonngg way away from being able to assemble functional DNA artificially.

Haven’t done it with the simplest organisms yet, far less something as complex as a human.

Shouldn’t we start with bacteria or something?

Oh wait,, thats exactly WHAT it is. I’m as qualified as that dude, and I* say they were cavemen, wearing skins, and they were gettin’ down with the dirty girls from our human camps. And that caused a war, and some babies with some DNA from the Neander valley bros.

“Shouldn’t we start with bacteria or something?”

Nobody want to see that in a zoo. We should skip right ahead to Neanderthals, mammoths, and T-rex’s.

If we can get four or five breeding pairs of T-rexes in Texas, they’ll start a hunting season for ‘em. In thinking a .460 Weatherby mag, or a Barrett 50 bmg rifle. But if you can’t shoot it offhand, that kinda seems unsportsmanlike. (i think)

I read a short story about that very thing. It all started with a scientist cloning a Neanderthal, just as this article describes.

The idea in the story is that Neanderthals were much smarter than the Cro-Magnon men, but could could not survive the Ice Age due to their higher dietary requirements that came from being so large and muscular.

However, once Neanderthals were introducted into modern society with little resource scarcity, they started outcompeting modern man, taking all the best university slots, etc. The story was leading to another confrontation between us and them, and the Neanderthals intended to win this time.

Those are anthropormorphic interpretations. They've humanized the skull required. A neantherdal's skull is not human shape. If I haven't done it correct, here's the web address. http://www.themandus.org/profiles.jpg http://www.themandus.org/profiles.jpg

T-rex had very little brain and a whole lotta meat between the side of its chest cavity and its heart. You’d need to be damn lucky to knock it down with one, maybe two shots of anything 50cal or smaller. Better to use the 25mm Bushmaster or similar. Otherwise, the only thing shooting it would get you get is 6 tons of really angry chicken with big teeth.

No, I’m talking abour really smart.

Suppose that we brought Neanderthals back to life, and the reason they went extinct wasn’t because they were dumber. Suppose they were more intelligent than modern humans, and just happened to have a run of bad luck that wiped them out before they could develop technology.

Suppose that Neanderthals turned out to be genetically intelligent enough that when brought back and put into a modern world with modern education they absorbed everything we could give them, made straight A’s and advanced into our universities by age 14. Suppose they had eidetic memories and could typically grasp physics, chemistry and so forth pretty easily.

Imagine a world in which modern humans are outclassed by a different variety of human being.

Well, they seem to have made tools and jewelry, and probably had language, so that sounds pretty human to me.

It seems we may have won out though because although they certainly had big enough brains, we were simply nerdier and more social and could probably talk more clearly:

How's this for an explanation? A woman would stay with her own tribe, so any Neanderthal-CroMagnon baby with Cro-M mother would be incorporated into a Cro-M tribe and bring in Neandertal DNA. If the father was Cro-M, then the baby would be incorporated into Neandertal tribe.
