Less than two minutes to switch over a semi AR-15 to full auto only. Selective fire requires changing 5 of the semiauto components for full-auto M16 components, and adding a sear trip, AKA *auto-sear,* either a commercial or homebrew version, or the military M16 component. Takes about 20 minutes and two fairly closely located holes in the side of the receiver.
No machining of the commercial receiver?
IF, and ONLY IF, you gave me, or any other guy who has all the tools and training to, well, make any of the parts, much less fit existing parts, all the go-fast parts to convert an AR to a M4/M16, then sure, it’s “easy.”
But then, for me, making a simple blow-back full auto isn’t difficult either. I’m talking something like a M3 “grease gun” - it’s a very, very simple design and it works in full-auto (and only full auto). It would be just as simple for thousands to 10’s of thousands of other gunsmiths, machinists, mechanics, etc.
Give a basket full of M16 parts to a mechanical dweeb such as Piers “Knob Cheese” Morgan, and they’ll find a way to screw it up, starting with launching springs across the room.
For perspective on how easy or hard it is to make a full-auto weapon, one has to consider the AK made from a manure shovel:

FWIW, my favorite part of that huge photo-essay was the Russian Blue kitty. We used to have one, they’re a great kitty. Very affectionate.
Guns are not hard to make. Period. Nice guns are hard to make nice. But make a functional weapon? Pfftt. There are street urchins in the mountains of Pock-i-stan churning out weapons by the dozens and dozens with an electric hand drill, a collection of files, a forge and some skill. They might not be high quality, but they work just fine.
I consider drilling holes in a specific spot to be “machining.”
After all, in the machining industry, over half of all the material volume removed in machining operations comes from drilling holes.

Nope/ Not for either the full-auto only lightning link*, [two parts] nor for the selective fire drop-in auto-sear [six parts.]
We figured on about that same percentage as tank gunners, too. 63 rounds for the 105mm main gun, around 6000 for the 7.62mm co-ax machinegun.
Especially if they are in an area where everyone else is unarmed.
Somehow, the whole discussion keeps being steered away from the fact that most of these mass shootings are conducted in venues where people are defenseless, sometimes the result of policy, sometimes by law.
It reeks of a set-up to me.
Especially the bit about the 'easily converted' and 'using legally bought parts'.
I thought the BATF had decreed any critical part of a machine gun (to make it fire as a machine gun) is a machine gun, too.
All of this plays into the anti-gun people's hands, IMHO.
