President Obama recently proved that he shoots skeet, and now Piers Morgan can say he’s shot an AR-15. Morgan traveled to Texas today to find out what it’s like to shoot the gun “used in the last five mass shootings in America,” including Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Morgan interviewed the owner of a Houston gun range, as he took his turns firing various version of the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle with a 30-round magazine. His aim wasn’t perfect, but as Morgan said, “once I got the hang of it and began pressing the trigger faster and faster, it was just firing very, very fast.”
He proceeded to shoot an AR-15 that had been modified from semi-automatic to fully automatic, a procedure that is illegal, but as the range owner explained, fairly easy for individuals to do with parts that can be purchased legally. Morgan said it felt “unbelievably powerful.”(continued)

Just a question about select fire. Don’t outfits like the one on Sons of Guns do conversions all the time. They deal in some very heavy firepower. Didn’t they make a quad mount for MG 42s?

I believe what Pier meant was that when he fired it on autonatic he was amazed that he could spray out bullets and eventualy use the spray to get on target he couldn’t hit with a single bullet.

I don’t know how hard it would be to convert other types of weapons. Red Jacket does have a fairly well equipped machine shop on site. They could do a lot of stuff you average guy in his basement could not.

Thanx. I didn’t really make myself clear. My question wasn’t about the mechanical end but the legal side. This guy in Texas did a select fire conversion and has been accused here of violating federal law. Red Jacket has often worked with full auto weapons and are not under any federal indictment. So my question is what exactly is the law for automatic weapons?
Who in their right mind would admit to owning such a thing? "Owning a range" wouldn't protect you from the wrath of the feds, nor would a FFL or any amount of NFA documentation. If the mod was done after 1986, that gun is an all-expenses-paid ticket to Leavenworth.
Perhaps it was a legally-owned NFA M16 and Piers was just tarting up his story a bit?
As I understand the law, it has been illegal since the passage of the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 for a civilian to own a newly manufactured full auto weapon in the USA. I was under the impression that the existing ones may be transferred but no new ones can be manufactured for civilian use.
Thanx for the info. If that means a pre 86 weapon can be modified then you’ve answered my question.
