Colorado Representative Apologizes for Remarks
Semi-News/Semi-Satire ^ | 23 Feb 2013 | John Semmens

Posted on 02/25/2013 9:16:14 AM PST by John Semmens

Democratic Colorado State Representative Joe Salazar issued an apology for suggesting that women fearful of being raped couldn’t be trusted with guns.

“It was not my intent to offend anyone,” Salazar maintained. “It’s just that I don’t believe more guns are the answer to any public safety problem. I think that if a woman has a gun a dangerous situation could easily be escalated from rape to homicide. Her having a gun just increases the risk of doubling the casualty count.”

As an alternative to arming themselves Salazar suggested that women who feel threatened should carry whistles. “Most of the time a toot or two will scare off a potential attacker,” he insisted. “If it doesn’t it still increases the chances that the rapist will be interrupted or possibly apprehended. The big plus, though, is that the woman will be relieved of the risk of feeling guilty for shooting someone. In my mind, it is better for a woman to be an innocent victim with a clear conscience than to have to bear the blame for harming another person.”

I have a gut feeling some accounts have been hacked. Getting acid attacks from guys who have been members for years.

Believe me, I understand all too well. I had my blood pressure go through the roof a few times.

I cut John Semmens some slack on this for two reasons:

First, one of the requirements of those who fend for themselves when it comes to getting their news is to vet their source. FR is hardly safe in that respect (as you well know) so this serves two purposes, it makes people examine not just the content of the body of the message, but the source as well. In this sense, we should thank John for giving us cause to do that. It is vital.

Second, I think John is an originator of satire of some renown outside of FR (if what I have heard is any indication) so it is buyer beware.

But, yes. I do understand what you are saying. Hell, I am almost speechless with anger at what I see going on. Keep in mind John Semmens isn’t “making stuff up” to make us even angrier, he is doing the job of a satirist, to present something to us that is seemingly absurd, yet serves the purpose to sharpen and focus effectively the point of an issue.

Please don’t take it personally, I just thought you were unneccessarily harsh with the other poster there.

As I have occasionally mentioned to Mr. Semmens, it is becoming increasing difficult to distinguish satire from reality. I am not an expert on this, but I have always held the opinion there must be a nut of absurdity buried somewhere that a discerning mind can ferret out, and unless there is something about baby-eating liberals, it is nearly impossible.

And even then.

I missed the original story (probably when FR was down), but let this be a lesson to everyone:

Wait until you are elected before saying something stupid about rape. They can keep you out if you're not already in Congress, but it's harder to throw you out once you're there.

LOL...actually, it DOES say “Semi-News/Semi-Satire”

I think that just about describes it, and it is even highlighted in red.

Maybe the ‘nut of absurdity’ is the idea that a Dem politician would actually apologize.

Ya know.... many have claimed to know what someone else is thinking, and rarely have I ever found it to be true.

It’s not just you. Many have not bowed the knee to Baal. A lot of posters recently are writing things that are, frankly, inflammatory. Seems like an orchestrated effort to incite violence is underway to give the government an excuse to react. The first casualty of war is truth.
