An innocent photograph posted on Facebook of a beaming, spectacled boy proudly displaying a birthday present from his father prompted a police raid befitting an al-Qaida terrorist.

New Jersey resident Shawn Moore, a National Rifle Association firearms instructor, range safety officer and New Jersey hunter education instructor, gave his son a .22-caliber rifle for his 11th birthday.

The photo of a smiling boy, holding his legally-owned weapon, hardly indicates any kind of abuse. The photo alone should have made that clear. ... In a sane world.

Can’t, local, state and federal employees are exempt from lawsuits unless they agree to be sued....

That almost never happens....

I am in a situation where my kids are grown and gone, and I've at least met the grandkids (and even like a couple of them), and I live alone. So I can and will insist on living free.

I don't think acting cowardly in the face of the opposition is 'strategic'. I think it's just cowardly. Security in exchange for freedom isn't worth it.

OPSEC. Don't post anything on the web that you don't want everyone in the whole world knowing about.

When my wife's small business was audited by our good friends at the IRS last year, the auditor admitted that one of the things that prmopted the audit was the difference between the income the business reported and our perceived lifestyle as determined by his looking at our Facebook pictures.

Just FYI...

Is this a country we want to live in? Fascist jackbooted thugs threatening to put you in jail and kidnap your kids? is this the USA we knew?
For cripes sake, I held a gun many times when I was that age. Also a member of the NRA at 15.

The real story here is not the Police, but rather DHR. What is more scary? Police asking to see your guns, or some bureaucrat with the power to take your kids? Don’t piss off the DHR lady!

I have a good friend whose wife died. Great father. Home looked kinda rough but his kids were well fed, loved and did well in school. Some busy body who I guess thought a single dad couldn’t take care of kids called DHR. Came knocking on his door one day demanding to inspect his house and talk to his kids. If he didn’t let them in, they threatened to take the children. Scared him to death. Made periodic inspections of his home for the next 2 years.

FB and Google are increasingly the go-to tool of Big Brother. I've got a FB page to keep family happy, but nothing of any consequence ever goes up there, and definitely nothing pertaining to politics or guns (and more recently, religion). No pictures of my face, either. I let them think that I am a happy camera-shy guy with few opinions who likes dogs and reading the classics.

Google is harder to beat, but I am slowly getting all references to my real name and info deleted. Some of it is permanently cached, though. But that I had gotten canny sooner!

I don't advise exchanging freedom for security. We have neither anymore, anyway. I advise deceiving the tyrant in order to buy time to organize a resistance.

That's my .02. Obviously YMMV.

This is just how the Obama gun grabbers intend to operate. If you have firearms in your home and have kids its child endangerment and your guns get confiscated. If you are a returning veteran you are assumed to be mentally unstable and your guns get confiscated. If you see your doctor about depression or are prescribed antidepressants or tranquilizers your guns get confiscated. If you are accused of illegally downloading copyrighted music and the police enter your home to confiscate your computer they take your guns too. Not only are your Second Amendment rights under assault so are your rights under the Fourth Amendment.

That USA is long lost. I am outraged and I feel for the guy and his family, but his troubles should be a lesson to all of us. Posting a picture to FB of your kid with an Evil Black Rifle is police raid bait. I’m not even sure that taking such a picture in the first place is a good idea, especially if it is taken with a networkable device like a cell phone. Big Brother wants nothing more than to scrape as much data as he can about you off of the Internet. Can you guarantee that your phone doesn’t have a hidden back door for him? I can’t. We need to be wise as serpents now.

No disagreement from me.

But like many laws written after some tragedy this law fails to an absurd level of protection.

The law requires that any report of child abuse be investigated by child protective services.

This woman from protective services was required to make a visit to the how and evaluate home and investigate danger to the child.

I don’t know when this happened but if I was a betting man I would wager she will be back.

I have a picture on my FB page of my 2 year old Grandson squirting his Grandmother with a squirt gun. He has an obviously joyful expression on his face.

I wonder if I should remove it. A 2 year old ecstatic while firing a gun. OH the Horror!

Laws protect the anonymity of anyone reporting child abuse.

Not when it is am false report. Or am I wrong?

It’s the person in the seat of authority ordering the investigation that needs to get chastised.

Just as when the firearms confiscations begin, the primary targets should be THOSE WHO GIVE THE ORDERS.

(I used to say “law-abiding” in addition to “peaceful,” but given the laws these days, that’s no longer a term of approbation.)

“There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.” - Ayn Rand
