Google takes Easter heat over Cesar Chavez doodle
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | March 31, 2013 | Brad Knickerbocker

Rather than Easter, Google's doodle today commemorates farm labor leader Cesar Chavez's birthday. That's brought much criticism, although Chavez himself was a devout Christian.

Google is taking heat for its Easter Sunday doodle – that cartoon modification of its logo that changes from day to day.

Today, the middle letter is a round portrait of the late migrant farm labor union leader Cesar Chavez.

Like many such doodles, it comes on the birthday of the subject. Mr. Chavez was born March 31, 1927 in Yuma, Arizona.

But appearing on Easter – one of the holiest days for hundreds of millions of Christians around the world – the Chavez Google doodle has set off a mini-storm of protest, including (inevitably) in the twitterverse.

Some examples:

“Unbelievable! Their true colors are showing! Yahoo here I come!”

“Damn Google…. No Easter wishes from those Atheists.”

“A huge BOOO!! to Google for making their holiday doodle about Cesar Chavez's 86th birthday instead of Easter (celebrated by over a billion).”

“I've got nothing against Cesar Chavez, but even Chavez was a Catholic. I doubt he'd want Google to recognize him on Resurrection Day.”

“Better a dead lefty, them a risen Lord.”(continued)

“Bing search page graphics are outstanding, especially the animated ones.”

Agreed! The moving image of the Japanese storks in the mist was just amazing. Made me wish I could buy a copy & display it on the wall.

Bing is Microsoft.

And Microsoft absolutely backs Gay Marriage.

You may be a Bing-er but every time you use Bing, it makes money for Microsoft and Microsoft funds efforts to impose Gay Marriage on Americans.

Ballmer and Gates were big contributors to the Wash State gay marriage initiative.

Let’s be honest FReepers, 97% of the internet is controlled by statists, progressives, and crony capitalists.

http://startpage.com/

It doesn’t track you like Google. It’s page is plain 365 days a year, which is fine by me.

That pic didn’t move for me. It stayed frozen. I wonder why?

The linked image I posted is a static version. You have to go to the Bing search page and click back 3 days using the left arrow on the bottom right of the page.

I agree.. it's goo-, goo-, google good-bye!

I reluctantly stuck with google because you can narrow the search and it was real good at catching my spelling errors -- though it was extremely irritating when I spell it right and google substitutes (adds) what it thinks I really meant.

A cursory look at Bing shows similar features -- though I hope it does not add strings of characters for what it thinks I meant.

I have not found yet how Bing will let me narrow a search to a year or more in the past not including the current year.

I did click back to Thurs. I also saw it on Thurs. morning when it first/originally came out. It didn’t move either time. Until you mentioned it, I hadn’t realized it was supposed to move.

Maybe it’s your browser, I see it moving when I use Google Chrome but it’s static with IE 9.

I haven’t changed browsers since I saw the cranes moving, & I also saw the CA waterfall on the beach, which was great—especially the waves.

Otoh, when it comes to technical stuff I am a moron—& that’s not too strong a term. I asked my computer guy to switch me off IE & back to Firefox, which I love. He said he would but he didn’t. After my last mega-virus I’m terrified to make changes myself. I guess maybe I will never see this photo move, but thanks for all your input anyway.

It could also be my Security setting. It’s some ‘custom’ type setting, which the computer guy, not me, did. I read that I would need to change it to ‘default’ to see certain things, but I didn’t do it. As I said, I’m in terror-mode after the last computer-virus meltdown, so everything stays as the repairman left it.

One last thought. When you went to the picture did you notice controls in the bottom center of the page? (Left, Right, Up, Down arrows and + - zoom in out buttons)

If you see them, see if you can get them to work.

At the bottom center of the photo there are no controls. No arrows, no zoom. (& this is not the static pic you linked; this is the one I got to by scrolling back through the days to Thurs.)

It’s got to be Security setting. The custom setting the repairmen used probably blocks a lot of things. I went to a site where I used to see moving images & I saw everything except the movable images. I suppose I could call him tomorrow & ask if the setting can be moved back to default. But likely that was the setting when I got the virus, so I’ll have to weigh it.

I wish I could have been more help. I’m no tech wizard by any stretch but I think you’re certainly wise to leave things alone until you check with your repair guy. FRegards! :)

Thanks for all your input. At least now I know the underwater diver/grotto is supposed to move, which I hadn’t realized before. I’m curious enough to figure out a way to see it, even if it just means dropping in on a friend. Thanks for the heads up!
