Millions of Americans could be misdiagnosed as mentally ill

“In the days of the Malleus, if the physician could find no evidence of natural illness, he was expected to find evidence of witchcraft: today, if he cannot diagnose organic illness, he is expected to diagnose mental illness.” (1)

The Malleus Maleficarum was a 15th century text which instructed Inquisitors on the proper method of identifying, trying and burning witches. Though it was many years ago that renowned psychiatrist Thomas Szasz (1920-2012) used the example of the Malleus to comment on the diagnostic practices of his fellow physicians, it seems he might have been on to something as today psychiatrists and educators alike are concerned that the recently completed “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders V” (DSM 5) will be responsible for psychiatrists improperly diagnosing millions of Americans as mentally ill.

Produced exclusively by the American Psychiatric Association, the DSM provides physicians with a handy checklist of mental illnesses. Simply fit a patient into a category and...

Isn’t liberalism a form of mental illness?

I find most of human behavior to be symptomatic of an illness.

If my dog and cat had thumbs and a voice, I'd fall to a lower place in evolution.

This point is soberingly true.

And they must disarm the “mentally ill.”

Given the power, they’ll flip that one on its head,

defining opposition to the collective as mental illness,
requiring incarceration and experimentation.

And they must disarm the “mentally ill.”

That is the point. With Obamacare in full swing next year, the DSMV will be released, thus making millions of Americans mentally ill. They'll get a bill passed to adjudicate all those mentally ill as "mentally defective," essentially wiping out American gun ownership as we know it.

As much as I hate to agree with L.Ron Hubbard about ANYTHING - before I knew he was a cult leader I read one of his science fiction books. Horribly written dreck - but an alien visitor to Earth did say one insightful thing...

The police can only keep you for a limited time before you are given a trial before your peers where they have to present evidence of guilt, and you are sentenced to a limited time of incarceration.

A psychiatrist can keep you for an unlimited time, there is no appeal, no evidence besides their own judgement that you are “crazy”, and they can keep you until you are “cured” isolated in a padded cell drugged out of your mind.

There are real mental illnesses that are biological/genetic disorders. I have two sons. One is an AF pilot, the other suffers from Schizoaffective Disorder. I would really like to see a national conversation about mental illness to help remove the unfair stigma. www.nami.org is a good place to start.

While that may be true, the patients must also bear responsibility for this. They want insurance to pay for their sessions and in order for this to happen, they must have a mental health related diagnosis.

Unless someone is suffering from a serious mental illness and needs constant monitoring and meds, IMO they should not use insurance coverage for their sessions.

The DSM is used by psychiatrists and psychologists and psychological examiners. It is not used by other types of medical doctors because they don't have the training of mental health doctors. This article is misleading as it makes it appear all types of doctors use this. Your family medicine doctor cannot use it. He can refer you to a mental health evaluator but cannot make a diagnosis on his own.

If you don't go to a mental health evaluator, you get no mental health diagnosis from the DSM, now version V. I psychologically evaluated patients and used the DSM of whichever version was the latest. It would be up to me to stick that new label on a patient but just because the label is there, I wouldn't have to use it. And, I wouldn't. Such a label would only apply if it was causing a patient not to be able to live his/her life.

If a patient stayed in bed for six months (some long period of time) because he/she thought he/she was sick, couldn't live his/her life and was found to have NO physical illness requiring total staying in a bed, then that label might apply, however I think it would be due to another mental problem and it would be my job to find out what that was so it could be corrected.

Don't think your family doctor is going to slap this new label on you - he/she can't do it.

As a father who has been court-appointed as my adult son's treatment guardian (diagnosed with Schizoaffectve Disorder), you're not exactly accurate. I have been through Mental Health court with my son and found it to be quite fair (maybe we were just lucky). By the way, we have two son's and one (who is not ill) is an AF pilot.

My ill son was appointed a lawyer and his rights were paramount in the mind of the judge. There were several doctors who provided testimony, along with myself as family. My son was court-ordered to be committed for 60 days, which at the time he really needed as he was suffering from severe psychosis. I'm happy to report that he is doing very well now and in fact just got promoted in the Civil Air Patrol - due to the right medications and treatment and an understanding family.

There is so much myth and misinformation about Mental Illness flying around that it is little wonder that those affected often don't accept treatment. For the record, I teach a 12-week course to family members who have loved ones diagnosed with serious brain disorders. In addition to teaching the course, I am also my state's coordinator for the NAMI Family-to-Family education program. I have taught this course probably 20 times to hundreds of family members since 2006, so feel I have more than average amount of insight into this subject. I'm sharing this because educating the public about the real nature of mental illness and the real need to recognize that illnesses like Schizophrenia, BiPolar, and Major Depression as the very real illnesses they are is important. I get very frustrated, for example, when the only time mental illness is discussed in the media, or by politicians, is on those rare, but terrible occasions when a mentally ill person does something tragic. The focus is always on gun-control, when the real problem is that, in most of these cases, there was a young man with a mental illness who wasn't getting the treatment he needed.

I estimate the number of truly sane people left in North America at this point to be somewhere between 25 and 100.

Chances are you’re one of them.

“What do you want to do that requires a disarmed citizenry?”

They must all be asked that. Frequently. At every opportunity.

That's certainly worth doing, MrB, though we already know the answer, which happens to be the one answer self-proclaimed "liberals" and "progressives" would never express aloud.

The history of leftist regimes during the past century is a history of censorship, political repression, poverty made worse by state policies, pseudo-science governed by political policies, increasingly rigid social stratification, political prisons, imperialist and ideological wars, and beyond all else, mass murder of citizens of leftist regimes. The leading "progressive" to date is Mao of communist China, who was responsible for the deaths of at least 70 million Chinese, most by starvation, and of that total, half or more were children.

Mass murder is most emphatically not a mere means to an end, but a goal whole and complete in itself. We can say mass murder is proof of psychopathology, proof of sociopathology, or any other scientific-sounding -ology; none of that, however, changes the fundamental fact:

Mass murder is the highest leftist goal.

This is a parable of modern Liberalism and the modern nanny/Welfare State. Mom & Dad don’t want to discipline their kid or spend time raising him so they have the doctor diagnose him as having ADD. A guy is lazy and doesn’t want to work so he gets the doctor to diagnose him as depressed. And they all end up getting subsidized happy pills under Obamacare and perhaps even a disability check under Obama’s expanded SSI SOAR program. So the whole country is crazy, doped up and collecting a government check!!

Thanks for the update. Things have definitely swung the other way and it is now a lot harder to involuntarily commit someone, sometimes even when they are obviously crazy and potentially harmful to themselves and others.

One of the “goals of communism” printed in the Congressional Record of January 10, 1963:

Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.

Turns out old Joe was right after all.

"Mass Murder is the Highest Leftist Goal."

Yes, exactly. Pathetic that the lessons of the old Soviet Union are so ignored -- and that its policies are being enacted as I write this:

How long will you keep killing people?" asked Lady Astor of Stalin in 1931. Replied Stalin, "the process would continue as long as was necessary" to establish a communist society.

I handled hundreds of signals to all parts of the Soviet Union which were couched in the following form:

To N.K.V.D., Frunze. You are charged with the task of exterminating 10,000 enemies of the people. Report results by signal.--Yezhov." And in due course the reply would come back:

In reply to yours of such-and-such date, the following enemies of the Soviet people have been shot.

------Former Soviet Spy-Chief Vladimir Petrov

Estimates of 61,911,000 Murdered in The Soviet Gulag State
