Meant to add, I hope I’m wrong, we need someone who truly stands up for the principles he is articulating.

I’m leery of being “fooled again”

He’s saying the right things. The doing remains to be seen. I hope he walks his talk. Many don’t. Rubio, for instance, another FR darling at one time.

The founders originally were willing to let any citizen that was a resident for 21 years be president.

John Jay wrote to George Washington presiding over the constitutional convention to add the natural born citizen requirement to prevent a foreigner from being chief of the Army and the change was accepted without much discussion.

So the original intent of many of the founders was to let any long-term citizen be president. The requirement that the president be born a citizen was to prevent foreigners from becoming president.

So can Cruz be both born a citizen and born a foreigner?

“And of course your above words don’t appear anywhere in the Constitution.”

Actually they do. Read it again. Artcle II, distinguishes between those born overseas who later became citizens, and those born in the united states of Amrica.

Good post, I wish I had some time right now to explore it further with you.

Right now the BBQ is calling with the promise of succulent, marinated kabobs!

The interesting thing about jurisdictional arguments is that the US government has jurisdiction over any American anywhere, including the power to tax income earned by citizens residing outside of the United States.

It seems US jurisdiction travels with citizenship. Ted Cruz's mother carried US jurisdiction with her.

Well, clearly he was. So, given the documented desire of tge Founders to preclude foreign influence from the office of Commander-in-Chief, it appears that the word "natural" actually does convey meaning above and beyond "born citizen." Hmmm, now what could that be, lol?

Yes, jurisdiction travels with citizenship, amd thats why a different one is undesirable in control of our military.

...the only reasonably solid evidence is that he was born in Hawaii.

Right, then; I'll bite. What "reasonably solid evidence" would that be?

So ‘jus solis’ makes the two sons of deposed Muslim President of Egypt Morsi who were born in the USA eligible for POTUSA? I think not and want not because there are millions of Muslims in the USA along with 50% of the population just waiting to get that bandwagon rolling. I believe the Founders were well aware of the consequences such possibilities and set eligibility for POTUSA adverse to such.

It’s not just jus soli, it’s the other one, jus sangre or whatever it’s called. That is why the Founders used a term which was widely and clearly understood to mean “Born on the soil from parents who are citizens”.

It ain’t rocket science.

And I’m saying that the Dems will no doubt pull the “jus solis” card if Cruz is dumb enough to pretend he’s a NBC. Levin is on the bandwagon and he should know better too.

If the American electorate had the faintest clue about what they were doing, these interminable hair-splittings would not be needed.

Do you even realize that there is a difference between “citizen” and “natural born citizen”?

Pete, you’ve only been here since 2008. To many here, you’re still a noob; if you want to use the “noobie” card. CCP posts good info and he’s not a troll or a fool.

Yes. It's obvious to everyone that there's a differnce, but that's not what we're discussing. The question is whether or not there's a difference between a born citizen and a natural born citizen.

Try to keep up.

Here is what the principal framer of the 14th Amendment Rep John Bingham stated when defining a natural born Citizen:

The Constitution controls this, not the opinion of someone after the fact. Neither their opinion nor yours carries the force of law. The Constitution says "natural born citizen", but it does not define the term. It does not specify how many parents have to be American or if any parents have to be American. There is no definitive ruling on this by SCOTUS that I am aware of. If Cruz runs there is not a chance in hell, IMO, that SCOTUS will issue a ruling that boots a front runner from the race.

Cruz was a U.S. citizen when he was born. He has never naturalized. If he were not a natural born citizen, he would have had to have been made a citizen at some point in the past in order to serve in the Senate. He never did because there is no need.

If we don't get behind this guy and run him we are CRAZY. He is the only viable candidate willing to speak up for sanity and here we are nitpicking this to death.

The term “born citizen” is not used legally in discussions about types of citizenship.

I’ve been keeping up on this topic since summer 2008. Plenty of people are born a US citizen but are not NBCs.

He was naturalized at birth as a statutory Citizen. That is not a true natural born Citizen that Article 2 Section 1 calls for. A statutory citizen (bestowed by man’s pen) can never be a “natural born” citizen (bestowed by God/nature).

“The question is whether or not there’s a difference between a born citizen and a natural born citizen.”

Regarding the legal term of art “natural born Citizen” and basic logic, trees are plants but not all plants are trees. Natural born Citizens are a subset of “born Citizens (citizens at birth)” but not all “born Citizens (citizens at birth)” are “natural born Citizens”.
