Agreed, Sasha is NOT an abbreviated ‘Natasha’, diminutized ‘Natalia’... which can mean ‘Xmas’ or ‘birthday’, since the Latin route refers to the (natal) birth of Christ
I don’t speak Russian, but know enough Czech and Polish to get the gist/origin of most Russian names
Then why, in the Obamas' minds, is Sasha the short form of Natahsa? It could not be an affinity for things Russian, since that would imply ignorance.
I think 'Sasha' is simply their nickname for her.

My dog was named Sasha...She was a fluffy, snow white cockapoo. Not sure why I decided on that name...but it must have come from my somewhere in my Russian background. Both my grandparents were Russian.

This is ridiculous. It’s a name for crying out loud. I know non-Russians who picked names they liked the sound of for their children, that happened to be Russian. No conspiracy.

I believe that "SKI" is normally the Polish ending, while "SKY" is Russian.
(Of course our Russian language speakers may correct me but this is what I've always been told by my Polish speaking relatives)
