In just the last twelve months Congressional members and top level administrators at the Department of Homeland Security have warned of threats to the national power grid so serious that should they occur life in America as we have come to know it would change almost instantly.
Former DHS head Janet Napolitano, in a letter to her successor, advised that “a massive and serious cyber attack” on the US Homeland is imminent and that a “natural disaster — the likes of which the nation has never seen — is also likely on its way.” This was followed up by a comment from House Homeland Security Committee senior member Yvette Clarke (D-NY) who noted that, “the likelihood of a severe geo-magnetic event capable of crippling our electric grid is 100%.”
Couple those threats with the realistic possibility of a rogue or state-sponsored attack on America by way of a super electro-magnetic pulse weapon, and the odds of a widespread American Blackout increase dramatically.
With our complete dependence on the power grid to maintain the regular flow of commerce, communications, and emergency services, even a short-term grid-down event could lead to serious consequences.
According to a report commissioned by the Department of Homeland Security which cites data from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the infrastructure supporting our power grid is so outdated and vulnerable that an attack or natural disaster could lead to an outage scenario of unprecedented scale.
If you live in or around any of these areas you can expect a societal breakdown within 72 hours or less – and with traffic systems inoperable and roadways likely jammed, there’ll likely be no way out.

True, in the mid summer.
The power grid is indefensible.
In the event of a civil war it will be down for the duration.
I know.
But in ‘03 northeast blackout there were people who insisted that an attack on the power grid was “impossible”.
I still laugh at them for it.
I have it on very good authority that many parts of California get cold in winter. Just sayin’.

Sort of.
Up at our ranch about two weeks ago we got down to just a couple of degrees above zero. The snow from that storm is mostly still on the ground.
But down here in the Bay Area it got up into the high 60s today.

No such thing as 130 million without power for several years.
Maybe five million, after they get done eating the other 125 million...
Problem is that the main transformers would be fried.....no spares....and no manufacturing capacity to build new ones.

It would happen quickly. You have to remember that with a power system collapse, your personal store of fuel would be whatever is in your tanks - likewise every delivery vehicle. Without electricity to run the pumps, fuel would be locked just a few feet beneath the surface of every gas station. My read is that the east is more vulnerable than the populated areas of the west because of the assumptions that (a) any event would be regional and (b) a few transformers may be dealt with without issue, and a few more is an inconvenience. Only where the number of large transformers is concentrated within a region would one run into insurmountable difficulties.
Problem is, when the lights go out, the areas they (the power companies, government,etc) concentrate on getting restored first are the high-density population centers. IE, the voters.
I live in what I would not call remote, but would call removed area. Usually, if the power goes out, they always get it turned back on in the towns and suburbs, rather than here.
So I’m pretty set up, I could go a couple weeks on generator.
The 270,000+ Amish won’t notice.
If you picked out twenty power plants in a region....say California....then total chaos would be in effect within forty-eight hours. Once people get the message of the effect and the word “years” for recovery...the guns come out, and civilization will no longer exist. You need to find a vehicle, and kill if necessary to get fuel. You plan an exit from this affected region and will encroach on anyone in the safe region...killing them if necessary to get food, fuel and shelter. I could see a 100,000 Americans per day....getting whacked.
If I know the Obama administration they will use this
to push for a GREEN energy grid built by Solyndra.
So much for shovel ready jobs. Only a couple trillion and all we got were some bird slaughtering windmills.
