President Obama has issued sanctions against Russia for its de facto annexation of Crimea via a laughable referendum vote. The President’s sanctions amount to punishment for seven Russians, largely from Putin’s inner circle. The Russians literally laughed at the sanctions. The Russians actually expected a serious move from Obama. Instead they got an embarrassing half effort. Obama shouldn’t have even bothered. At least not bothering would have represented a legitimate policy decision on behalf of the United States. Let Russia govern Russians in Crimea, that’s at least a policy. Instead we got a half effort that suggests Obama has no idea what he’s doing.

Ironically, laughing at Obama is the one thing that might goad him to action. McCain showed back in 2008 that Obama was amazingly thin skinned about being mocked. For a brief moment, McCain had some internet videos up making fun of Obama, portraying him as Moses parting the red sea when he talked about lowering the sea levels, or comparing him to Paris Hilton. Obama totally lost his cool at being laughed at, and became petty and mean about it. So naturally McCain stopped it ASAP. But it's out there, the way to get under Obama's skin is to mock him. I think that's why Saturday Night Live refuses to crack jokes about him. They know he'll be personally offended and won't laugh it off like every other president has.

So by making Obama look like a joke, they might make him ticked off enough to actually take a stand.

Does Obama, and/or the government have the authority to “sanction” individuals? I understand they could proceed with asset forfeiture, but at least there would be a hearing to determine if the money was proceeds from illegal activity. What if Obama decided to sanction the Koch brothers?

I can take a lot of crap- I'm a survivor of domestic abuse, childhood abuse, bullies at work... The one thing I can't stand is to be laughed at.

I think the sanctions against individuals is an extension of Alinsky. His tactic was to personalize, freeze the subject and ridicule. These fools in the White House are so predictable. And so damned incompetent.
