AZ:Governor Brewer Vetos Gun Law Reforms
Gun Watch ^ | 23 April, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

Governor Jan Brewer vetoed gun law reforms that would have held local governments accountable.   HB 2517 would have put teeth into the state's preemption law, with penalties for government officials that prosecuted people  for violating illegitimate local ordinances.   Florida passed a similar bill in 2011 after scofflaw governments routinely persecuted citizens who exercised their second amendment rights.  Pennsylvania and Ohio are considering similar measures.

HB 2339 would have ensured that local governments who wished to prevent people from carrying weapons in public buildings would have to do more than depend on those who would obey signs directing them to disarm.   If people with a permit were not allowed into the public buildings, then security measures would have been required to insure that those who did not obey the law were disarmed as well.   Representative Brenda Barton of Payson was disappointed at the veto.   A similar bill had been vetoed last year, and she said that she had crafted the bill to address the Governor's issues with it.  From therepublic.com:

House Bill 2339 would have allowed people with concealed-carry permits to bring weapons into government buildings unless security measures — including armed guards, metal detectors and gun lockers — are in place. The measure excluded public K-12 schools, community colleges and universities.
Kansas passed a similar bill last year.  Opponents of the bill have claimed that it will require them to spend large amounts of money to implement; proponents have noted that it does not take much money to remove a sign.

Governor Brewer has served two terms and is not expected to run for reelection.

Governor Brewer seems to be spending way too much time with University administrators in social settings.

At least that is my guess.

Kansas passed a similar bill last year.

The Gov of Kansas signed a bill today that takes away the counties and cities ability to ban open carry.

proponents have noted that it does not take much money to remove a sign.
This is the main, and most important point in my humble opinion.

So true. Brewer is no different from our Governor Nathan “raw” Deal. He pretended to be conservative until he got the governorship. he is governing like a Dem.

“Deal just signed a sweeping pro-gun law though”

It would have been more sweeping if Deal hadn’t twisted GOP legislator’s arms to water it down at the last minute.

He has just jammed Common Core down our throats.

Georgia girl, you might want to rethink that.deal is a conservative and if you don’t think so look at how high deals’ approval has been and that is conservatives saying that.just watch what happens next with regards to gun laws.

Deal got elected and practically immediately embraced and was pushing SPLOST. When the GA public rejected it he sheepishly backed down.

When a month or two ago the GA legislature was a hairs breadth from passing legislation outlawing Common Core and even specifically stating the Governor would be barred from intervening Deal twisted GOP arms and got the bill quashed. Now he has jammed Common Core down our throats.

When the GA legislature wrote sweeping gun reform legislation Deal stepped in to water down the right to carry in Church to opt in.

Nathan Dean is a Federal dollar Ho. He salivates at the idea of any Federal dollar.

He closed the 400 toll did he not?I agree with you on splost and he let the voters decide(what a novel idea by the way)and it was soundly defeated.Thats a fine line between private property rights and the right to carry.I personally believe you should be able to carry anywhere and everywhere.I do not like the idea of common core at all.

Deal is better than Jason Carter but I think David Pennington could also beat Carter. I’m voting for Pennington in the primary.
