Last American POW in Afghanistan: tragedy or traitor?
menofmind.com ^ | June 14, 2012 | C. Aaron Russell

Rolling Stone recently published a riveting feature article, The last American Prisoner of War. It has reignited a heated debate over the price of patriotism. The writer chronicles the controversial story of American soldier, Bowe Bergdahl, who walked off his post three years ago in Afghanistan, now a POW held captive by the Taliban. This is a must read, not unbiased and littered with unnecessary expletives in traditional Rolling Stone fashion, but encompasses the full sense of who this man is and the circumstances surrounding the polarizing situation. If you’re like me, you’ll be left holding a mixed bag of emotions. On one hand, we have a disgruntled soldier, very likely a deserter, some claim traitor, although there’s almost no evidence to support that. However, he did express anti-American sentiments in personal letters to his family, abandoned his post in a time of war, through his own gross negligence was captured by the enemy, and is now begging to be rescued from the enemy he sympathized with. He has put the lives of his fellow soldiers in danger, the very ones he turned his back on, as they attempted to search for and rescue him. In enemy hands, he has become an instrument of anti-American propaganda and a valuable bargaining chip for the Taliban. The United States now will very likely have to negotiate with terrorists in a prisoner exchange and release many dangerous enemy combatants to secure Bergdahl’s freedom. Many have suggested that his actions are inexcusable, and because he committed a crime against his country by deserting and put himself in this deadly situation, he should be left to suffer the consequences. One Fox News military analyst, Lt. Col. Ralph Peterson, went to so far as to suggest the Taliban would do us a favor if they execute

POW dad’s bizarre deleted tweet raises questions about Obama’s prisoner swap

Whatever else it might be, “God will repay for the death of every Afghan child, ameen!” doesn’t sound like a rousing call to patriotism.

ABalkhi is the Twitter handle of Abdulqahar Balkhi, a Taliban spokesman.

It’s important to remember the elder Bergdahl posted the message while his son was still in captivity and might have been willing to say anything while talking to the sergeant’s captors. It’s also unclear whether the tweet was intended to be public.

But the contents of the posting are making a lot of people suspicious.

The circumstances of Bergdahl’s capture are already odd — no one knows why he left that Army base five years ago and a USA story published Saturday shows Bergdahl is thought by many in the military to have either deserted or gone AWOL.

I don't know what to make of this story. Bizarre.

I was wondering about the captive and what his mind set is going to be after 5 or so years of constant muzzie input. Stockholm syndrome? Maybe Kabul syndrome?

He walked away from what I have read. I thought that was called desertion.

And praise Obama for his release while ignoring the terrorists he released.

We really need to get rid of this POS.

This is the first I’ve heard about the guy being a deserter. If he left his post and took off AWOL as far as I’m concerned he’s on his own. Now we have traded 5 detainees for his worthless hide.

Whats with the picture of him in the news still with the Taliban beard?

Now how about trading 5 illegal aliens and lets get that poor marine back from Mexico who never deserted.

He’s a deserter and a traitor, NOT a “POW”!

If he just walked away, he’s a traitor and we should send him back.

Terrorists attacked us and killed 3000 innocent Americans. Our war with them was justified. If he walked away, he’s a dirtbag traitor.

I realize that a lot of people have very fixed opinions on this, but I can’t follow along with the herd here. This soldier was held captive by terrorists, and we paid off the terrorists to release their hostage. It is immaterial how he became a hostage - I really don’t care if he went AWOL and walked into their hands or maybe was a traitor who tried to join our enemies.

At the end of the day, we paid off terrorists to release a soldier, endangering the lives of soldiers and American citizens the world over. Each one of us became a little bitcoin in the eyes of terrorists, to be bartered away for what they want. Ask Israel if they regret paying off terrorists for the return of their soldier, and the dozens and dozens of repeated payoffs they’ve done since now that the precedent was established.

I can add this to the story; he and his family come from Hailey Idaho, one of the most liberal/far-left parts of Idaho. Sun Valley/Ketchum area, where all the rich elitists like J F’n Kerry have vacation homes. So it is no mystery why this family is the way they are.

Another great accomplishment by Obama which turns into a rotten stench that will be completely ignored by the lamestream media.

When I saw the red “Breaking News” feed from Fox News yesterday on my smartphone, announcing that a U.S. soldier kept prisoner in Afghanistan for years was being freed in exchange for four Guantanamo Bay detainees, I nearly went through the roof. There is absolutely NO WAY in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that any U.S. Administration should release any of the terrorists we’ve caught, even if it IS to get a soldier freed—not to mention that this particular soldier apparently deserted his post. The Obama Tyrannical Administration at work again.

I never laughed at anything about Obama. He is by far the worst thing to ever happen to this once-great country and we may never recover from his damage.

FUBO - once again.
