Soccer ‘R Not Us
Michelle Obama's Mirror ^ | 7-2-2014 | MOTUS

I know - it seems like it’s been going on forever! And still two weeks to go. It’s not the World Cup itself, it’s the Google Doodles. How many more of these stupid multicultural soccer gifs on its header (hee, hee) do we have to endure? 48 so far, and counting:

world-cup-2014-47-5450493904027648_5-hp

Yeah, Team USA lost to the chocolate people - and no, that’s not racist, it’s just who they are:

Sure, it would have been nice to win something for a change, as we’ve been on a losing streak for a while now. First we were handed a bitter loss when the 2011 World Cup games were stolen from us by Quatar while we were still stinging from our loss of the 2016 Olympic Games to Brazil (now that was racist). And that’s why Brazil is the the only nation south of our former border that we are allowed to officially hate.

So, with our loss to Belgium we’re out of the World Cup playoffs; yawn. Everybody around here is more concerned about our 13 game, 9 to zip losing streak against the Supreme Court. This has made our relentless march to nullify the Constitutional limits on Big Guy’s powers somewhat of an uphill battle. Even Monday’s narrow 5 to 4 loss at the hand of the Supremes has some people spooked (not in a racist way), mumbling things like “if we can’t implement our plan to end the Republicans’ War on Women® what can we implement?”  I’ve even heard some whispers of “What next? The Senate?”

So I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that basketball and football are still safe around here, even in the age of Obama. Because Bo’s always found b-ball more compelling than soccer:

bo basketball

And we still really like spiking the football:

bo football

Although our Secretary of State clearly favors soccer, as he should:

Soccer is the official sport of socialism.

Entire legions of it’s followers don’t do a damn thing and have never done a damn thing and get a check for not doing it.

That’s the main reason I can’t stand it.

What I don’t get is it’s called a World Cup and the citizens of those countries go wild for their national teams but their teams are made up from the best players money can buy no matter what country they are from. So what’s the meaning when one country wins over another. Not much from what I see. If they were truly national teams I would be more interested. Just my opinion.

I prefer footie to any of the games mentioned. For the uninitiated, footie is Australian football. A hell of a game that provides more excitement than American football; similar athletic prowess to soccer along with the rough and tumble of rugby all on a field the size of Rhode Island! (Ok just a little hyperbole on that last part)
Nonetheless I made certain on my last visit to Australia to actually attend a game as opposed to only seeing it on TV. AMAZING!

Thanks for the heads-up on a sport I wasn’t familiar with.

But can your footie guys run up and down the state of Rhode Island and speak 6 different languages at the same time like some of my FIFA guys can? lol

Plus, I find soccer very un-American.

You certainly aren't a very good 'global citizen', are you?

...every American will be on board for soccer.

After hell freezes over. After I'm dead.

That just proves my point. All the teams you listed, sucked.

U.S. goes 1-1-2 and it’s great? We fire our coaches at Bama for that. Players too.

The fact that the goalie had so many saves just shows how inept the team was. Is. But “wait till next year”!

I don’t get it. I guess that’s on me. I don’t get excited about watching paint dry either.

We respond to winning teams. When we get one ... we’re on board.

I understand yesterday’s TV audience was higher than the World Series.

“Their bodies were just not conditioned for the quick start/stop of basketball. But my brother knew he couldn’t run with them at their style/pace.”

Exactly. I think a lot of folks don’t realize how specialized sports are at the highest level. It’s such rare air that the vast majority of one sport wouldn’t be able to switch and have success at the highest level of another sport. It takes too long to get the skill set and all the while your body is specifically adapting to whatever you are getting it to do to be successful. While at the highschool level the best athletes commonly are among the best at multiple sports.

You're right; but not all of us.

Last year on a hot day I ended up with friends in a hipster bar (only because there were 50 different taps) with multiple TVs showing soccer games.

It was entertainingly humorous to see normally geeky, weak, and effeminate men wearing Manchester, United and other jerseys, whooping and hollering like a bunch of us rednecks on a Saturday night.

I read today that the total USA team salary was $30 million.
That’s total - for all the players on the team.
Tom Brady gets that much sitting half the game on a bench for the year.

In contrast total salary for the Belgium Fusball team was $390 million.

Guess we got a ways to go.
I guess USA is getting the ‘great’ kudos for their team effort ( which was great in the final 15 minutes) , and in comparison to past years. I mean you could only be great in comparison to years past.

In Fussball or Futbol a player has to run up and down the field constantly for up to 2 hours,

...one of soccer’s most prevalent myths...watch more closely...

Name one of our football players who could keep up with any soccer player for two hours.

...sure, I’ll try and do that, if you’ll promise to name a soccer player who could survive one routine football play at any position other than placekicker (or holder)...

...are you so dense as to seriously believe that no NFL running back, or wide receiver, or defensive back, could not possibly survive a soccer game for lack of training...?

My question wasn’t about survivability. It was about endurance.

And yes I still question as to whether any defensive back or wide receiver could keep up the pace for up to 2 hours.
Too many times I’ve seen them with tongues lapping the ground on the sidelines while they get a moment to catch their breath and return to the game.

And let’s not forget most of our footballers play under a domed stadium; nothing like the blazing tropical heat in Brazil.

...you really are uninformed about football conditioning if you believe that an NFL receiver or d-back couldn’t maintain what amounts to an average jog (again, watch more closely...how many soccer players are running full tilt at any given time)over the course of a game...which by the way is often halted for a minute or two by the flopping of players knocked down by someone’s fingernail...

And let’s not forget most of our footballers play under a domed stadium; nothing like the blazing tropical heat in Brazil.

...you outdo even yourself with this statement...so the majority of pew-wees, Pop Warners, high schoolers, college
and professional players play under a roof...gee, who knew...

Think about it. If you eliminated the “offside rule” in Fussball then the whole team would just gather around the goal waiting for the ball to head it in. It would be just one corner kick after another.

Then the smaller (5m?) rectangle can be made golie's zone with players excluded from entering.
