Who on FR watches "House of Cards" Series
Vanity (Netflix) | 7-23-2014 | self

Posted on 07/23/2014 2:29:52 PM PDT by C. Edmund Wright

After being told by 3 or 4 associates whom I respect that I must watch it - and after putting it off for months - I finally dug in and power watched both seasons in past couple weeks.

I was astounded, on so many fronts. This is must see TV for political junkies. I mean, anyone might like it, but the politically involved will find it fascinting, and teachable, illustrative…..

Anyone else

I remember the original, it was awesome, I have no interest in the remake.

I don’t think this is a remake. Maybe same idea, same name, but this is no remake. It’s almost totally current. It’s up to you, but you would be glad you checked it out. It’s remarkably balanced in that it makes Democrats and liberals look worse than any Republicans (makes them all look bad) - but more to the point, it IS Washington.

I have watched it all through Netflix. Waiting for the last season to land there.

Enjoyed most of it. Nice to see a lefty portrayed as lefties really operate.

So it’s like “21 Jump Street” and some of the other movies that steal titles from awesome TV shows but bear absolutely no resemblance to the original?

I heard Spacey plays a great scumbag in it.

I really got hooked and it is driving me crazy waiting until next year, I think it is before the next series comes out. Really does seem true to life.

I also go hooked on "Breaking Bad" after I said I would never watch it. Now I am watching "Lilly Hammer"

I could do without the gay stuff (seems like Hollywood crams it in whenever they can, no pun intended) but otherwise its very well done.

Do I understand that it is only available on Netflix downloads and runs on no cable channels?

Look, I don’t know what your hang up is. House of Cards…hell, it’s a world wide cliche. No one production can own that title. But you can go ahead and let your own hang ups make you not watch it. The only loser in that will be you.

here’s what I think on the sex, gay and otherwise: it is part of Washington. Young hotties use it to advance their career. Creepy old men in power let it happen that way. So, is it overdone? Probably, but probably only by about 20%.

Very well done and well casted. I don’t think they could have done better than with Kevin Spacey. He is excellent in the lead role.

I have to agree with him. This is something different entirely.

No stealing. Michael Dobbs (writer of the books) and Andrew Davies (writer of the BBC show) both have production credits for the show. It bears a lot of resemblance to the original sources, but it has certain differences that have to happen being as we have no parliament, no prime minister, no king, it’s 13 episodes a season not 3, and it’s 2014 not 1990.

Not to hijack your thread, but does anyone but me think the ads on SeeBS for their Fall Series “Madam Secretary” look like a blatant continuing propaganda show for Hildabeast Klinton, with a slightly better looking (Tea Leoni) subject?

Spacey is friggin awesome…..but more than that, the dialogue writing is brilliant. It just rips.

Gerald McRaney is great too. No one is bad. No one is not believable in their role.

It got some criticism in the first season for weak writing. Made me laugh, since The West Wing received so many accolades for being well written when it was stock, corny, and painfully didactic.

There's probably not a person on the show I'd agree with politically, but they're well cast and entertaining.

My understanding is only Netflix. The episodes are about 45 to 62 minutes in length……something like that, but not all the same.
