CNN Wolf Blitzer: Why Don’t Cops “Shoot to Wound?” By Robert Farago on August 17, 2014

“On Thursday, CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer asked guest [lawyer] Jeffrey Toobin why police weren’t instructed to “shoot to injure,” instead of kill,”

talkingpointsmemo.com reports. “Blitzer’s questions arose during a discussion on the unfurling conflict in Ferguson, Mo. over the fatal police shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. ‘They often shoot to kill,’ Blitzer said of police. ‘Why do they have to shoot to kill? Why can’t they shoot a warning shot in the air, scare someone off if they think they’re in danger. Why can’t they shoot to, injure, shall we say? Why do they have to shoot to kill?’” [Click here to watch the clip] TTAG reader F reckons Blitzer’s ignorance . . .

Believe it or not, but it is true that the old time Los Angeles Police Chief William H. Parker during the 1950s and 1960s ordered his officers to only load and carry round nose lead bullets in their .38 revolvers.

No hollow points, or plus P ammo allowed.

Chief Parker's reasoning was that he believed many officers had their guns taken from them and were shot with their own guns. Therefore his thinking was that his officers would better survive such a shooting with their own gun!

Needless to say, many officers did not adhere to Parker's firearm policy!

I think that might be staged.

Yeah, aim for Center Mass. With the adrenaline pumping you are lucky to hit ANYTHING.

The fact that this cop put six bullets on target stunned me as remarkable. Remarkable as in, pretty damned good control.

Exactly!

What Wolf doesn't understand is a basic truth about real-world shooting situations: Even if you're a world-class shooter on the range, in a real life-and-death shoot you'll be lucky to hit that moving person at even five to ten yards. You couldn't reliably make a "wounding only" shot at three yards.

But more to the point: If you aren't faced with a deadly threat you have no business using a deadly weapon, especially in an intentionally non-deadly manner. "I'm sorry your honor, I didn't intend to kill him when I fired my pistol at him". It doesn't fly.

Said another way... If you have -time- to think about -where- to shoot somebody in order not to kill them, you shouldn't be shooting at all.

I hereby invite Mr. Blitzer to visit the pistol range with me on a date of his choosing. I will supply the weapons and ammunition. He can provide the expertise on how to do that in a kinetic situation.

The Ferguson officer shot the 6.4 290lb ADULT four times in the arm but the wounding
didn't effect him, he kept charging the officer.

Cut, check the script, take two.

Yeah, but whomever it hits is statistically less likely to be a liberal fellow traveler because they’re probably not in the midst of committing a crime. Might hit a Republican. Wolfie’s just playing the odds.

Toobin said police are trained to “never fire a warning shot” and to “never fire a shot to injure.” He explained that if police fire their guns, they must “accept the risk” that they are “gonna kill somebody.” Adding that: “If you are not prepared to kill someone, don’t fire the gun.”

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I want one of these:

"The same routine unfolds in Ferguson after overnight protests, residents move in for the cleanup. Also, the QuikTrip is fenced off and off-limits."

Yep. It was a rhetorical statement on my behalf.
