Immigrants illegally in California comprise nearly 10% of workforce

Immigrants who are in California illegally make up nearly 10% of the state's workforce and contribute $130 billion annually to its gross domestic product, according to a report by researchers at USC released Wednesday.

The study, which was conducted in conjunction with the California Immigrant Policy Center, was based on Census data and other statistics, including data from the departments of Labor and Homeland Security. It looked at a variety of ways the estimated 2.6-million immigrants living in California without permission participate in state life.Among the study's findings:

• Immigrants who are in California illegally make up 38% of the agriculture industry and 14% of the construction industry.

• Half of the immigrants in the state illegally have been here for at least 10 years.

• Roughly 58% do not have health insurance.

• Nearly three in four live in households that include U.S. citizens.

USC sociology professor Manuel Pastor, who worked on the report, said the data show how integrated immigrants are into California society."It's a population deeply embedded in the labor market, neighborhoods and social fabric of the state," said Pastor, who is a co-director of USC's Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration.

Advocates for more inclusive immigration policy say the economic contributions of immigrants are another reason they should be allowed to stay."Every one of California's immigrants helps shape our state's economic and civic vitality," said Reshma Shamasunder, director of the California Immigrant Policy Center. She said President Obama should take immediate action to limit deportations and "honor these contributions and advance economic prosperity."

And pay zero taxes and cost $20 billion in social services. What a bargain.

And send a good portion of the money they do make off the books back home to Mexico.

In fact, go check out the Western Union booth next time you’re in a grocery store.

MEXICO NO LONGER COUNTS AS A FOREIGN COUNTRY.

In Singapore they would be flogged in a public square and then summarily deported, never allowed to return for employment. No wonder Singapore has MINUS 40% unemployment. FOr those from Rio Linda that means there are 40% more jobs in Singapore than there are working age adults.

The illegals are working, as well collecting benefits. They know every welfare regulation, and how to get the max from the system even as they work, and get good wages. We’ve seen it, and those that speak English don’t mind talking about how smart they are at getting those benefits.

Yes for sure, that’s is way low. Your hard pressed to find a white person working, and walk around in a store and try to find one that’s speaks English to ask a question, and you sure don’t want to stop at a gas station and ask for directions.

That's my experience as well (California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Colorado)

• Nearly three in four live in households that include U.S. citizens.

There’s your answer. I’ll guarantee that every single one of those US citizens are receiving some kind of aid. As far as I’m concerned if their kids are on welfare so are they since they benefit from it.

Yes, and when you ask them why they take the benefits when they are working they smirk, and say “..the government is so stupid, they never check.” By that statement they know what they are doing is wrong.
