A Wells Fargo employee asked the CEO for a raise — and cc’ed 200,000 coworkers

Most people ask for a raise in the privacy of their boss's office. But one gutsy Wells Fargo employee emailed the CEO directly — and copied some 200,000 other Wells Fargo workers on the note.

On Tuesday, the Charlotte Observer reported that Tyrel Oates, who it says works in an Oregon office of Wells Fargo processing requests from customers trying to stop debt-collection calls, sent such an email to CEO John Stumpf.

His plea was not just to get a raise for himself. His proposal to Stumpf? Use the company's profits to give every employee a raise of $10,000. According to the Observer, Oates said the move would "show the rest of the United States, if not the world, that yes, big corporations can have a heart other than philanthropic endeavors."

An apparent copy of Oates' letter, with his name removed, has been posted on Reddit and includes that language. The letter cites Wells Fargo's second quarter profits, and reads: "why not take some of this and distribute it to the rest of the employees."(continued)

I’m pleasantly surprised that the Emailer still has his job.

I’m also somewhat squishly on whether that message might not have been a tad much.

I’d be afraid I’d be fired. I think tyrel is probably used to more protection than the usual, however.

Oates said his manager has told him he’s not in trouble. He said Stumpf has not yet responded.

What makes Tyrel think he deserves a raise?

Seems like the job he does could be outsourced to india or a call center in Budapest for less than $15.00 per hour

The company was so pleased with him he’s now been given a job in the Liberian office.

Tyrel was hoping to get fired. Unemployment and a nice fat racism settlement to pad it off.

No, outsource it to ComCast. Their call center folks would probably take a pay cut for the fun and entertainment they could get from desperate folks.

Oh, isn't that sweet? Why only $10,000? Why not $100,000 each? Why not just divide up the profits equally among all workers at the end of the year? Who gives a s__t about the stockholders? Who gives a s___t about the fact that the entry level clerks don't do nearly as much or have nearly the skill of higher level executives? Let's just make everyone equal? Wouldn't that be nice?

Why only $10,000 of the depositors' money?

Why not $1,000,000?

After all, it's just extra money that people have lying around that they don't need.

Actually, I think the entire stock market system is corrupted and needs to be done away with.

Stocks are no longer about raising cash to build a business.

How does that work, exactly? Does the guy have a big rubber stamp that says "Request Denied"?

Actually, the law says that if a customer asks, a company may no longer contact you by phone and must write you. If they keep at it, you may sue and collect damages.
