A Wells Fargo employee asked the CEO for a raise — and cc’ed 200,000 coworkers

Most people ask for a raise in the privacy of their boss's office. But one gutsy Wells Fargo employee emailed the CEO directly — and copied some 200,000 other Wells Fargo workers on the note.

On Tuesday, the Charlotte Observer reported that Tyrel Oates, who it says works in an Oregon office of Wells Fargo processing requests from customers trying to stop debt-collection calls, sent such an email to CEO John Stumpf.

His plea was not just to get a raise for himself. His proposal to Stumpf? Use the company's profits to give every employee a raise of $10,000. According to the Observer, Oates said the move would "show the rest of the United States, if not the world, that yes, big corporations can have a heart other than philanthropic endeavors."

An apparent copy of Oates' letter, with his name removed, has been posted on Reddit and includes that language. The letter cites Wells Fargo's second quarter profits, and reads: "why not take some of this and distribute it to the rest of the employees."(continued)

I would fire him for violating the usage rules of the corporate email system.

I would also fire him for disrupting the good order and discipline of the company. His stunt distracts employees.

At my first airline, a small commuter, a pilot sent an engraved hula girl clock to our CEO that said, ‘Thanks for keeping all the profits.’

We got a $100 bonus check along with our paycheck that week.

It’s such a toddler mentality....like a child thinking that the lady who works at the candy store is the luckiest person in the world because she can eat as much candy as she wants.

I’d probably give the guy a promotion. I’m betting he has more guts and tenacity than his boss.

The guy should ask his boss for a raise, not the CEO. If his boss doesn't think he's worth $10K more, then he can take his talents elsewhere and work for someone who values his "guts".

Personally, the guy sounds like a left-wing idiot, and that alone would be grounds to can him.

Clearly one of his “talents” is his willingness to address issues of concern.

His boss should have told him, “You and everyone else did get a $10,000 raise and it’s being used to pay for your healthcare.”

We had some morons at Kaiser who would send their cookie recipes etc to @all.users. . If everyone took. 10 Seconds to scan and delete it still burned up hours of company time....

I agree... I’m fine with giving Oregon to Canada. The guy makes $15 per hour..... working in collections.

Wells Fargo made more money in 2013 than any other bank in the United States. The good news .... is .... if they screw something up in your mortgage and you have to call and talk to someone and dispute them.... the guy you get to talk is working for $15 per hour. Is there any wonder why most companies customer service is so bad?

Keep everything within ten miles of I-5 from Eugene north and you have yourself a deal. We’ll give you Montreal in exchange.

i heard this from a disgruntled wells fargo employee...
er, on second thought, i shouldn’t post excatly what he says.

but anyrate, 0-2% raises every year while the board gets a lottery like bonus every year, means we should all work hard and get a seat on the board.

the way it works at this bank (also probably at most other similar big company) is that you’d never get more than 5% raises, it’s usually 0-2% depending on your rating that year (also, we’re not allow to give a 5 rating anymore unless we write a paper justifying why the said employee deserves it). and also your pay percentile have a certain influence; if you’re over a certain percentile, your raise will get less and less.

now, the funny thing is, if you do lateral position changes within the company every 2 years, you’re more than likely to get a 10% raise each time (you do have to ask for it when you apply).

” - - - “why not take some of this and distribute it to the rest of the employees.” - - - “

Ah yes, the Voice of the Re-Distribution Parasite Class.

Karl Marx had a more quaint way of expressing this parasitic idea:

“FROM EACH ACCORDING TO HIS ABILITY, TO EACH ACCORDING TO HIS NEED.”

my friend told me that their high deductible health insurance gives 800$ every year.

they still do that now, but you have to do a yearly health screening to earn it.

He's in Oregon. Service will get worse when they go from medical marijuana to recreational.

I hate Wells Fargo. I will never do business with them again...

As for the corporate spammer, intentionally ccing 200,000 employees is an abuse of their IT resources. He has every right to ask for a raise, but spamming every other employee is a real jerk move.
