I am asking Freepers for help in diagnosing the mysterious illness that doctors have failed to diagnose thus far. Our 3-year-old grandson has been sick for several days with high fever, a rash that started on his face but has now spread to his entire body, loss of appetite, and now peeling skin around his eyes, nose and mouth. His fever is minimal during the day, but starts to increase in the afternoon and gets close to 103.

He has been to the doctor several times, had a strep test that came back negative, and was taken to the local children's hospital for dehydration ($400 and all they did was give him juice and crackers). They did a blood test which was normal for white blood cell count, but said he is slightly anemic.

First they thougth he had a recurrence of fifth disease, and the hospital doctors thought he might have mono.

He is finally eating a little and will drink a little juice, but he whines and cries constantly and acts like his feet hurt. His rash is very itchy most of the time, so he scratches at it, particularly around his waist.

If you have any ideas or know of any children who have something similar, please post a reply.

He has another doctor's appointment this afternoon, so we will see if they have any better answers than they have so far.

And pray for him, if you will.

Kawasaki syndrome came to mind. It's NOT hand foot mouth disease.

A temp of 103 PLUS the peeling skin means needs treatment NOW.

The waist thing reminded me of Black deer Tick bites; causes a rash, itching, and swelling.
That depends on whether there are deer , elk, etc. in the area.
Spittle from the tick causes spriochetes to enter the body, where they remain clandestinely, sometimes for years, and then infect that part of the body where they have taken residenc.
Realtively unknown , but now recognized as a medical issue; blood tests frequently come out negatively (even though it is the issue).
Controll is doese of anti-biotics over 3-4 weeks.

Scarlet fever has been virtually unknown in this country for many decades.

I wonder where it might have (cough obama's unaccompanied children cough) come from?

The doctor’s won’t apply a test for Kawasaki - because one doesn’t exist. You need (as another freeper put it) a great hospital associated with a university to take the child to. They will do a better job of eliminating the other possibilities. Prayers up!

My son, he is in his 40’s now, cried and he was hurting so much. I thought it was poison ivy or something like that. I kept putting poison ivy medication on it. It was awful and it didn’t work.

Went to a specialist that diagnosed it. Put him on medication and he improved.

This son was prone to allergy and asthma. Always thought he had a very light case of chicken pox.

Just a thought! Please inform us to his diagnosis.

I considered that as well, but his skin is only peeling around his nose, mouth, and eyes and not severely.

About 3 weeks ago, he did have strep and was on antibiotics for that. He couldn’t tolerate the first one they prescribed so they had him on a Z Pack.

At first my daughter thought he had a recurrence of strep, but the tests were negative for that.

I will mention this to her, but, once again, nothing seems to fit his symptoms exactly.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. Keep them coming; I’m considering all of them as possibilities.

Thank you. I am worried, and we don’t live close, so that makes it worse.

You said he had a strep test but it sounds like Scarlett fever.

No, I think the first antibiotic they gave him was amoxycillin.

When my son was 9, had his tonsils removed, ended up with a staph infection a few weeks later. Started out complaining about pains here and aches there, first in his legs, then his hips and lower abdomen. Rash showed up, sometimes on his back, other times on his legs and stomach. Ended up where the staph infection settled in his right hip bone.
If your grandson is complaining about pain in any joint, have an x-ray done immediately.

Yes, Hand, foot & Mouth Disease was my first thought too. Our granddaughter had that and was hospitalized and very sick.

“About 3 weeks ago, he did have strep and was on antibiotics”

There are no coincidences but ...

I am not a doctor but once I had mono and strep at the same time, but they couldn’t detect the mono using common tests. I languished for near two weeks until some smart Military PA decided to check for it.

Mono was one of the things the ER doctor listed as a possibility. Did you have a rash or peeling skin?

Jesus, she asked for medical advice, not quackery. You can’t “remove” viruses by eating clay. Viruses live inside your body’s cells.

Contrary to what many will tell you, you can still get measles with a vaccine. You might would think the medical professionals would know it when they see it, but generally they rule it out to begin with when they learn the person has been vaccinated, so they won’t even consider it. Research it and go to a doctor that doesn’t worship at the feet of the vaccine makers.
