Doctors to get Medicare pay cut if they don't 'meaningfully' use electronic medical records

The bullying of the nation’s physicians continues apace, now turning to penalizing doctors who don’t meet the administration’s one-size-fits-all approach to medical records. Bruce Japsen of Forbes reports:

More than 250,000 physicians and other health professionals are being notified as early as today that their payments from Medicare and Medicaid will be cut because they aren’t adequately using electronic health records in their practices, the Obama administration confirmed.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, known as CMS, is telling about 257,000 eligible medical care providers who are largely physicians that they will be paid 1 percent less in reimbursement next year from both the Medicare health insurance program for the elderly and the Medicaid insurance program for the poor because they failed to comply with so-called “Meaningful Use” of electronic health records standards in 2013.

This is another reason for doctors to shun Medicare. The electronic medical records requirements have been a disaster for many physicians in small and solo practices, particularly. Instead of saving time and money, they impose new burdens. One physician in solo practice I know has had to add a half-time staff member to cope with the extra work. And the need to stare at a computer and fill in boxes and blanks while talking to patients disrupts the close communication between doctor and patient necessary for sound diagnosis. Instead of looking intently at the patient, the physician must look at the computer while proceeding down a checklist.

What a sad story. I’ve read similar over the past year, it’s happening all across America. Obama truly has destroyed what once was the world’s most excellent medical system. Obamacare will drive it into 3rd world crap, like communist Russia & Cuba.

Thank you and yes he does. Why can’t his blind followers see what he’s doing?

When penalties start being paid by the docs, more will exit.

It is a sad story and it did not need to happen.

What is even sadder is that the Republicans have issue to run with Obamacare and they don’t seem to be interested.

I know, that’s what’s so frustrating with the GOP. They could cream the Democrats by simply having people tell their sad stories, or relating the sad stories as a reason to stop the insanity...place the blame where it belongs: on the Democrats, who all voted for this!

The cost of EMR is greater than 1% for a small practice when you consider staff costs, and reduced efficiency.
EMR also increases privacy risks including liability from patient data breaches (HIPPA violations), and overexposure to minor errors considered as fraud by rapacious Medicare auditors.
Small practices will avoid new Medicare patients, drop Medicare and go to cash, or accept Medicare patients only for those needing realtively higher margin procedures.

The GOPe won’t fight back. The Demorats use people’s sad stories to advance their agendas all the time.

Yes, I lost my doctor who was like that too. When I visited the new doctor, I apologized for forgetting to list dosages with the meds and vitamins I take. She said, “no problem, I can pull it up on the computer.” and she did. I was stunned because when I asked how she got that, she said through the hospital she affiliated with, a hospital I have never been to nor have I seen any other doctors affiliated with that hospital. The ihfo is already out there and being swapped around. What happened to patient privacy?

I know. They’re very good at pulling out (and even fabricating) sob stories. The GOPe is infuriatingly stupid (or maybe not...they can’t be this consistently stupid, either).

I don’t blame them one bit. I would too (good business sense). You can’t stay in business or get ahead by being a perpetual charity.
