So what is there to do in Tennesee?

Posted on 02/25/2015 9:35:14 PM PST by Jonty30

I'm coming to Tennessee for a week's vacation. I still don't know what I will be doing when I'm down there.

What is there to do that is of interest to a visitor? Anything I shouldn't do that might get me killed by the locals? Any little places that are pleasant that most people don't know about?

I'd appreciate any assistance for this.

I’m potentially interested in everything, especially some of the hidden charms, stuff that tourists might overlook when they go to the big attractions.

I will be checking this post intently over the next couple of days. I would really like to see it all, but I only have a week. :)

Well, you can check out Bluegrass Underground, which is very cool. Here are a few more ideas in the East Tennessee area:

There are 3 sections to Tennessee...Middle, which is Nashville/Chattanooga, West Tn. Memphis and East Gatlinburg/Great Smokey Mts. State Park.

Each section takes a week to explore...so much to do.

Go to www.Tennesseecrossroads.org and look in their archives and they have 30 minute travelogue on the wonderful things and places to go in Tennessee. It is a PBS production. Tennessee Crossroads

BBQ is awesome pulled pork the best ever. Best vegetables in the world. Fresh tomatos, okra, squash, turnip greens, cabbage and watermelons. Something about the soil makes the veggies extra good.

We’re fast. Part of my problem is that I don’t quite know where we will be staying, so it’s hard for me to be specific. However, we’re open to driving across the entire state if it’s worth looking at.

I did a one week trip in TN area in November and loved it.

Nashville: Opryland, Hermitage
Franklin: Carter House battlefield
Counce (near MS border): Shiloh battlefield
Huntsville AL: Space Center and War Veterans Museum
Chattanooga: Chickamauga battlefield
Murfreesboro: Stones River battlefield

People were great. Talked a lot about Southern food, guns and football.

if you like boating and water sports, fishing, hunting...naw i hear there’s an ice age right now up by kentucky lake.

Is that where Land Between the Lakes is located? I visited that area around 1972 while stationed at Fort Campbell. Beautiful in the summer.

If you're a motorhead, don't miss the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville.

Something else I forgot to mention, if you would like to see a real shrunken head, go to The Pink Palace museum in Memphis. Of course there are other interesting exhibits, but that shrunken head has always fascinated me.

I’ll keep thinking about other suggestions.

David Crockett’s birthplace in Limestone, eastern TN.

The Nolichucky River that runs right alongside is sort of hypnotic, especially in late winter/early spring.

A good selection of Crockett and Alamo literature in their library, alongside rifles, buckskins and history.

Sort of out of the way, but very satisfying for me as a big fan of early American history.

I’m driving back to Knoxville on Monday to drop of my pickup; are conditions any better than they were last week (we were in Knoxville and Maryville from the 15th to the 22nd)?

That would be the Parthenon in Nashville. A pantheon is a bunch of gods.

That was probably one of the things that surprised me when I checked the weather for next week for the area.

Even though Tennessee is about 2,000 miles south of me, Edmonton Alberta, our weather right now is very similar. I was expecting a good 10F difference in the positive, at least.

If you are going to be in the Smokies check out Cade’s Cove. You’ll probably like it, I do.
