Living behind enemy lines sucks. Thanks to assault weapons bans (AWB), shooters in New York, California, New Jersey and other so-called slave states cant take advantage of their Constitutionally protected right to sample the latest in firearms technology. The only guns [legally] available are often less accurate firearms that cost more money. And so the good folks at Ares Defense set out to enable even those citizens living in those awful places to have access to the very best in modern firearms. Although it looks like the unholy union of a rifle and a shotgun, the result could well be the best AWB-compliant firearm configuration on sale today. But in addition, the Ares Defense SCR might also be a firearm that suits hunters in the rest of America
The very first thing you notice about the rifle: its weight. Or the lack thereof. The specs put the rifle at 5.7 pounds, and my bathroom scale agreed. Most of the weight came off the barrel since Ares Defense decided to ship it with a pencil thin 5.56 barrel instead of something with a little more heft. Considering that the average AR-15 rifle clocks-in at around seven pounds, thats damn near a pound-and-a-half of weight savings that you dont have to lug around the field. Thats a good thing unless that weight savings impacts accuracy.

Why does the guy have a Hi-Viz finger?
Current mindset is that 30 round detachable magazines are a critically important aspect of a modern battle, er sporting rifle. They’re nice but accuracy, precision, and training is what wins the day IMO. I’m reminded of Marine sniper, Chuck Mawhinney who, using an M14 with a starlight scope, made 16 out of 16 head shots at less than 100 yards in the course of a few seconds on Valentines day, 1969. He had a 20 round magazine. He stopped a battalion of NVA from advancing across a river without even emptying that magazine.
An episode of Rescue Me suggests otherwise...
I am in complete agreement with your point. The M-16 was initially issued with a full auto ability, that was eventually modified to allow three round burst fire because the average troop would go through a full magazine in 3 seconds flat, and could not carry enough magazines into the war zone. Practice, precision and intent will make every round count. That and a calm demeanor. BTW, I love the M14 as much I love the M1.
Gunner
I took my stag Model 8 out yesterday and shot a .67" 10 shot group in high winds with a crappy trigger at 60 yards in about 10 seconds. I was pleased.
I feel much the same about my AR-10. You just cannot beat a 30 caliber battle rifle. The extra weight does suck but life requires compromises.
I like it! How soon will they be on the shelf at Walmart or Cabelas!
Standard AR-15 pistol grip is great for arthritic people, but I still like the old style grip as on the Ruger.
The military version pistol grip negates the use of the bayonet as you have to move the hand from the grip to the stock to get a good thrust.
The first test version of the 5.56MM rifle was a Winchester made to look like an M1 carbine. It was rejected by the military.
LOL, spooky orange rifle.
Silly string assault rifle!
