$200 million Hawaii Obamacare exchange bites the dust

After months on life support, the Hawaii Obamacare exchange will shutter operations due to the site being economically unsustainable.

The state sought more cash from the federal government - after spending more than $200 million - but when that option fell through, Hawaii had little choice but to close it down.

Fox News:

The once-highly praised Hawaii Health Connector has been “unable to generate sufficient revenues to sustain operations,” Gov. David Ige’s office said in a statement. The federal Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) informed the exchange last week that federal funds were no longer available to support long-term operations.

So why would any states incur the cost and headaches of trying to set up their own exchanges when they could simply use the federal exchange instead?

Because the Obamacare statute clearly said that they wouldn’t get Obamacare subsidies unless they set up state exchanges.

According to this website, Illinois has a State exchange operated through the federal HealthCare.gov site.

So what is the difference between a State Exchange, a "State Exchange operated through the federal Healthcare.gov" website, and states that did not build an exchange OR website, thus requiring their citizens to go to the Obamacare website?

Exactly which states will lose their "subsidies?" If I use the map at the link above, that should be any state colored in Blue that will lose their subsidies, correct?

Good question, which I don't have an answer to, other than possibly the corrupt 'rat states wanted their own piece of the gubmint exchange money.

Reading up on this further, Illinois is a State-Partnership Marketplace. The state does some functions, but access is through the healthcare.gov. I think Illinois would lose the subsidies since it is not a state run exchange.

That's a key reason why states with Republican Governor's opted out of building their own exchanges and instead deferred to the Federal Website.

It really didn't make sense for ANY state to build their own "exchange" unless they were chasing the federal $$$ associated with building and running the exchange.

McConnel and Boehner are probably helping Obama write up the test of single payer, with themselves exempt of course.

200 million gone. For 27,000 enrollees. Only 5500 per sign up. What a bargain.
