Will Russia’s ‘holy war’ save Syria’s Christians?
The Catholic Herald ^ | Sept 30 2015 | Ed West

Posted on 10/04/2015 8:09:00 PM PDT by WilliamIII

America and Britain have helped to endanger minorities in the Middle East

The war in Syria has taken a significant turn these past few months, with the migrant crisis and the intervention of Russia. Even a few months ago one might have expected Bashar al-Assad’s downfall, and two years ago one would have bet the house on it.

Now, with the refugee crisis seriously threatening Europe’s governments and the almost comic ineffectiveness of American-trained Syrian rebels, Western leaders seem resigned to accepting Russian’s involvement and some sort of truce that allows Assad to stay.

Whatever one thinks of Vladimir Putin, he has certainly outplayed Barack Obama in Syria; four years after the start of this tragedy Russia is much stronger in the Middle East, and the United States is weaker. There are reasons for this.

As this piece in the Spectator and this one in The Week by Michael Brendan Dougherty point out, Putin’s approach to Syria has actually been more rational than America’s. The American and British policy of backing a Gulf-sponsored uprising has been either woefully naïve or quite cynically designed to curry favour with the Saudis.

There’s something especially sinister about the way our governments have followed a Wahhabi-led scheme to overthrow a secular dictatorship, a revolution that would almost certainly endanger Christians in the land of St Paul.

Why? Russia doesn’t care.

No. It would be a great propaganda coup and fantastic PR, even in America itself.

Yes, a great side effect. If you read the article, the author ends up saying the same thing.

This makes sense. The entire US Mideast policy has been incomprehensible for the past several years. The power structure thinks the average citizen is too dense to notice. People sense something is off, but they’re too numb by economic troubles and terrible news stories 24/7 to even care.

Russia doesn’t care.

Except that they’ve been publicly saying this is one of their goals. That’s why the Russian Church has called it a “holy war.” You may question Russia’s sincerity, but that’s their public position. Actually, it’s Obama and McCain who visibly don’t care about Middle Eastern Christians, because they’ve been financing terrorists who are killing them.

From the article:

“Russia’s foreign policy is, no doubt, designed to serve Russia and those who rule Russia. But if it can bring an end to the war, and destroy ISIS, the al-Nusra Front and other militant groups, then Russia might just save Syria’s Christians and so fulfil the country’s historic promise to protect the region’s Christians.

No wonder the Russian Orthodox Church has given its support to “the holy war” against terrorism.”

"Russian Church" = "Kremlin"

And the Kremlin has no problem with slaughtering Christians, even using muslims to do the dirty work, when they stand in the way of the neo-Soviet Empire.

I guess you have a real problem with Russia bombing the jihadists in Syria who’ve crucifying Christians and beheading their children. I for one am glad to see them taken out. If you’re not, that’s your problem — and it’s a doozy of a problem.

No, I don't. I have a problem with the fact that you don't see the real end of it all.

Peter Hitchens column in the “Mail on Sunday” today is headlined ‘this war of the awful against the evil’.

That’s what we’ve got going on for better or worse.

Both Obama and Putin are using the narrative of the Book of Revelations against the Christians, and making the Christians of the world hate the US Government and possibly embracing Russia. An unimaginable amount of cynicism and hubris.

I wonder when the two of them find out they were merely useful idiots in all of this.

We work against Iran in Syria and Yemen yet conclude a nuke deal with them.

Makes no sense.

But Rush Limbaugh did make comments last Monday to the effect that the GOP wanted those Iran sanctions lifted as badly as Obama. Rush said its expected Iran will spend some of its 150 billion dollars in frozen assets on things other than terror and destruction. They will repair and upgrade their civil aviation fleet to benefit Boeing.

The clear implication of those comments is that business interests lobbied our political leaders to get sanctions lifted which would only be enabled by a nuclear weapons deal with the Iranian regime.

(It is not impossible. Putin has put himself forward as the protector of Christians in the world and seems to feel he needs the Orthodox Church to help keep Russia together. The Patriarch is pushing pretty hard on this.
