Saudi Arabia buying up farmland in US Southwest
CNBC ^ | January 15, 2016 | Jeff Daniels

Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf countries are scooping up farmland in drought-afflicted regions of the U.S. Southwest, and that has some people in California and Arizona seeing red.

Saudi Arabia grows alfalfa hay in both states for shipment back to its domestic dairy herds. In another real-life example of the world's interconnected economy, the Saudis increasingly look to produce animal feed overseas in order to save water in their own territory, most of which is desert.

Privately held Fondomonte California on Sunday announced that it bought 1,790 acres of farmland in Blythe, California -- an agricultural town along the Colorado River -- for nearly $32 million. Two years ago, Fondomont's parent company, Saudi food giant Almarai, purchased another 10,000 acres of farmland about 50 miles away in Vicksburg, Arizona, for around $48 million....

They’re not buying farmland - they’re buying aquifer water, which is essentially free to farmers. The problem is that the aquifers are shrinking, and causing soil settlement related damage. There will come a time when we start charging a water-usage related export tax on agricultural products.

Islamic imperialism. Let’s keep importing more foreign funded “settlers” and giving them handouts.

Let them buy as much as they want.

Then we'll just Nationalize it! See, turnabout is fair play, right?

Nice alfalfa field ya got there. It’d be a shame if something were to happen to it.

So, they buy land in another drought afflicted area to grow feed for their animals because they have water shortages back home? Why in California for goodness sakes? Couldn’t they have at least chosen a state that didn’t have a water issue. SMH!

The Bush family is buying up land on aquifers in Argentina. There they are considered the Rockefellers of South America.

Uh, you can't grow anything in Blythe.

It's nothing but sand, gravel and rock.

Nothing.

And no water.

I see you’ve been there, too.

Participated in a cross-country MC race (Moto-X) way back in 1971 that started out from Blythe. Forgot the name of the event, so many years ago, doesn’t matter now anyway.

Our truck overheated a few miles from town. Not sure how that could happen since the late morning temperature was only about 115 degrees! Popped the hood-grabbed the hose and started squirting down the radiator. Damn near got shot by the pistol-packing owner when he ran out yelling “If you want water it’s a buck a gallon and you’ve spent two dollars already”. Holy crap!

I understood his anger after he told us that he had to haul all his water in from a spring 40 miles away.

Then all this hay is a ruse. There has to be something that’s drawing them there. Could be cheap land, sparsely populated and close to the wide open border. Just saying.

Shipping food for animals back instead of shipping food for people back? Just proves how devastatingly stupid the Saudis and other arabs really are.

If this is true, that they are shipping animal feed back to their dairy herds, they surely deserve to become extinct, the arabs that is.
