Under regulations established in the 1980s, delegates cannot take money from corporations, labor unions, federal contractors or foreign nationals. But an individual donor is permitted to give a delegate unlimited sums to support his or her efforts to get selected to go to the convention, including money to defray the costs of travel and lodging.

If Cruz ends up within 200 delegates of Trump, he should be deemed to be in the lead.
I've also heard Trump referred to as a "clown", but I prefer to think of him as a showman - neither clown nor con artist. He acts in a manner calculated to draw free press, and I'm okay with that. Knowing what he is doing and doing it in a way that helps him win votes makes his outlandish behavior a positive.
I'm watching and waiting for him to hit his "Paste" button to respond to post #12. I have another browser tab open watching for the same thing in another thread.
