Weekly [sort of] Prepper Thread
Myself | June 24,2016 | Mike Suchman

Posted on 06/24/2016 5:02:51 PM PDT by TMSuchman

Greetings Everyone. Time for us once again to gather around the computers & speak of what we need to do & are going to do if & when our civilization falls down flat upon it's face.

And before we begin, I know that I am kind of lax about putting this thread out. I/we have our priorities in place. and for me I have a wife & son both with special needs that come first & foremost in my life. Then comes our homestead, and stuff down the line from there.

My garden is doin ok, since we are having the triple H's[hazy, hot & humid] here in Mo. And I'm fightin the garden raiders. I'm about to break out the air rifles [named "Rodent Remover',"Splat Stick","Bunny Blaster",Squirrel Smacker"] for their finial judgement. I also over the Father's Day weekend got to go learn a new skill, It is bow fishing. I seem to be half way decent too. I just need to get a lot more practice before I can chalk it up to being able to put food on the table. My state's dept. of conservation put the class on for free. This is one resource that we need to be using for our continual training & education. I seem to get new ideas from them all the time.

Also a lot of you out there would like to see articles on different subjects, like when & where is the best areas to "bug out" to, or how to build the perfect fortress for you & your family. I have NO problem with someone else jumping in here and writing an article from time to time. I for one do not have all the answers [and a lot of the time am "winging" it]. So if you feel like you have an issue that is burning you up on the inside, please feel free & jump in & put it out for all of us to read & discuss. [Just my $.02 worth btw] I am also gettin my windmill system just about ready to test deploy, [just to see if there are any "bugs" in it] And putting my "junkyard" ideas to work. If the wind systems work, then I'll tackle a solar system, backups.

Also has anyone else [besides me] been watchin the price of gold & silver today? Gold is $1318.20 and went up $50.00 to day, silver is $17.79 up $.38 today all based upon the events in England & Europe. Unrest makes the price of gold & silver go up. So keep a close eye out on the world events.

I try to use the “Rules of 3” [they are NOT engraved into stone, but real good guidelines] 3min with out O2,3 hours without good warm shelter,3 days without water,3weeks without food & you get death.

Now the average store has about 3 days worth of food stored in it. so you can roughly figure 1 week before the food riots start, but when those in the inner cities have figured out that there is NO law & order avail, they are going to tear themselves apart right away, and the survivors will start making their way out of the cities towards the suburbs. And those in those areas will hold out for a bit, but won’t last long. So then they all will head to the rural areas. I’m just hopin that the Veterans that are left will start to band together & put the world back in some sort of a working condition/s.

I recommend the book: The Earth Abides by George Stewart.

It takes a continent level of catastrophe to result in what you are suggesting.

We have seen a few cases historically. Most involve war, espcially recently.

A long term crash of the power grid in the U.S. could trigger it, especially if it happened in winter.

I suppose a widespread nuclear strike might do it.

Virtually the entire rest of the world is in worse shape to survive such an event than we are.

Could happen, but the chances seem small.

Sounds like a challenge!

I have a daughter whose husband “farmer” Plants and nothing grows to maturity...no weeding and expecting sprinkler system to do the watering is a near total loss each time...but he tries again something different...Lettuce was good though!

Corn stalks were just enough for fall decorating. No ears over 1 inch around. Potatoes and other things eaten by bugs.

I took over care of the tomato plants ( in Pots) one summer when I visited, and watered and fertilized etc, until we had more than we could eat. The few jars that I canned sat on the shelf to decorate the pantry until after Christmas when she decided to use them.

I have one tomato plant here in Florida this year...First flowers were eaten overnight so now the next ones are small tomatoes, getting the dish detergent treatment, and it seems to be working...flowers I have everywhere!

There is another method besides canning to preserve green beans.

I have been studying fermentation. Canning is a relatively new approach to food storage. In the past, food was preserved by fermentation between growing seasons. Salt was more important for food storage than the conventional wisdom of dietary shortage.

Prior to glass jars, food could be stored in fired clay pots with literally a stone holding the product below the brine level.

Lacto-fermented “Pickled” Green Beans

Air lock lids are required (same as wine making) during the fermentation process.

thank you for the info on Lamb’s Quarters...it grows wild out in the rural part of northern Illinois. I did not know it was edible.

I do some foraging...Morels, Dryad Saddle, Puff Ball mushrooms. Various berries and nuts...and Chickweed...in the spring...when it is sprouting out. Then there is Purslane which grows in Midwestern gardens as weeds. I have not tried wild grains yet...will have to research that...

Hubby usually has pretty good luck with most of his crops. He is still eating corn on the cob that we froze straight from the garden into the freezer.

I still have a few frozen tomatoes from last year that I add to soup or chili. Made one batch of salsa - he said it was too hot. I just mix it with sour cream, and I think it’s just right.

We don’t have any squash, zukes, or cukes yet. It’s always a toss up on those. He like to stir fry the crook necks. I make spicy pickle spears out of the zukes, and dill pickles with the cukes.

I haven’t checked the corn yet. He said tomatoes this year didn’t turn out - he used jiffy mix starter, and I told him it wouldn’t work very well, but he ignored the warning. LOL

I am spending this summer hardscaping and building cold frames. The hardscape has wiped out the slugs and lasts practically forever. I have tamped it down repeatedly to make leaf removal easier. Mulch is a disaster for raised beds. It has to be replaced every year, was a weeding nightmare and allowed many insects to flourish as it broke down.

I will also be piping down water from a spring on the top 5 acres. The spring will give me one more water backup source.

Will be finishing up the rear garden project by installing the electric fence on the vinyl fence. One fabric on the top outside face and one on the bottom inside face. That has been successful (past) in keeping the pests out. The electric fence is solar.

I am convinced the weather is going to be changing over to the cold side for the coming decades. The cold frames give me flexibility with the green house of at least 2.5 plant cycles per season. That includes seasonal cold and warm garden plantings.

Neighbors who pose a threat are a serious issue. Whether they cheat, steal, vandalize, or in other ways cause problems, you have to handle it right. The Internet is not the place to post my general thoughts, and in any case I don’t have enough information to give the right answer to your situation.

Read up on how government worked in various eras, back when it worked, and try to use some form of due process, even if the final answer is final.

BTW, I have one neighbor who is a serious concern. I will keep an eagle eye on that neighbor if we reach the point where government can no longer be counted on even to the limited extent that it works today.

Metioning meteors...

Came across a story you can download and read for free about a Puerto Rican guy in 1988 who supposedly beamed up by a UFO and shown a huge meteorite would hit the earth near Puerto Rico. Lots of seismic activity would follow.

https://ariverat33.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/the-book.pdf
Pages 40 and 46 are the most important to read.

In it he says even the elites would get destroyed even though they try to survive on an artifical, floating island. I googled ‘floating island’ and found this.

See the Plans for Breakwater Chicago, a $23M Floating Island on Lake Michigan (2014)
http://chicagoinno.streetwise.co/2014/06/10/see-the-plans-for-breakwater-chicago-a-23m-floating-island-on-lake-michigan/

Project website.

Back in 2010 there was some Christian pastor who said that a big meteorite some 5 to 6 miles wide would hit the Earth near PR, but never gave a date. He reiterated his stance last year.
http://www.express.co.uk/news/science/612342/End-of-the-world-asteroid-apocalpyse-doomsday-Earth

What’s even more interesting than that is the statistics on the amount of meteors/fireballs reported. Back in 2005 it was around 920. In 2015 it was over 9,200 - a 10 fold increase in 10 years. 2016 looks like it will have even more reports.

2014 article.

2016 article.

What do you think?

If you don’t seriously outnumber them do not allow them free access to your supplies. They may decide they want everything and kill you to get it.

I don’t know your exact situation, so I’m afraid I can’t get more specific than that.

Our block is a really safe block, most everyone knows each other and get along well. We all help each other out and do things for each other. Except for the one family, that happens to be next door to me. Father is a loud-mouthed loser, long divorced with three adult daughters, only one is decent. The other two daughters have drifted away and back multiple times, and are currently living there, each with their own kids. The two daughters don't work, receive welfare and have their own kids there from multiple dads. They all smoke and drink heavily, and have indulged in drugs (at one point selling them from their home). When I've found liquor bottles on my lawn, I break them at their doorstep and that stops that. Cops have come out multiple times, only and always to their house for domestic fighting, a couple times arrests happened. Dad doesn't maintain the grounds, weed-infested and poorly maintained with paint that looks like graffiti. Getting the picture of my situation?

I and my other neighbors have called the cops in the past because of a black boyfriend stumbling down the block drunk while punching on cars. Or another boyfriend on drugs in the back yard at 3 am screaming his head off. Currently social workers are frequenting the house almost daily because of family fighting with the kids involved, a couple times they were removed from the home.

I have had quite a few arguments with the dad over things they have done, and more or less told him I will exact revenge the next time they get out of line doing something to my property. He has also had confrontations with the other neighbor on the other side of his house, the other neighbor pretty much said the same thing to the dad between us. Not only that, my other neighbor is a security guard so the two of us are armed and the bad dad knows that. If the SHTF, we can handle him.

See my reply #54. I and my other neighbors can handle the dad, easily. It’s the crazy adult daughters and their boyfriends that are of concern. Tattooed criminal looking types. One time a drug-crazed boyfriend of one daughter was raising a ruckus at 3 am, I went out on my deck overlooking their back yard and yelled at him to cut it out or I would call the cops. He got quiet, and pleaded with me not to do so because he just got out of jail. So yeah, I worry about my family if I’m not around to deal with a problem. Both my wife and adult daughter living with us have practiced handling handguns, but I don’t want it to come down to that; I’d rather be the one to deal with it.

Teach the ladies how to handle a shotgun. It is much more threatening and efficient.
