Postwar DP admittance was predicated on US Army security review at UNRRA administered DP Camps with UNRRA official reviews moral character, work ethic, etc, health examinations, stateside sponsorship by individual or organisation such as a church guaranteeing housing and a job. While effectively a bond, I don’t recall the full details, except that penalties could be enforced.

Even with sponsorship waits of a year or more could been anticipated based on US nationality quotas. Nothing like the collect $2000 and pass go of this bandit administration.

As with every other postwar green card holder, resident aliens were required to register their address, tel, and employment particulars every Feb. IIRC.

Registration cards were available at every US Post Office back then. PSA ads started public reminders on radio, television, and the news papers. If you are of an age you might recall such. Most don’t because it didn’t concern them. BTW, the annual registration cards were green in color.

Don’t know exactly when they stoppped the annual registration but think it might have been in Carter years.

I’d be 100% for it - if you cut non-MS/Ph.D. immigration by an equivalent amount. And I say that as a STEM worker of 25 years. Bring in the best and the brightest, leave the rest...
