I don’t need air conditioning, and neither do you
WAPO ^ | Aug. 18, 2016 | Karen Heller

It’s time to come out of the closet. Or, more precisely, the sweat lodge.

My family lives without air conditioning, except for one antique, semi-comatose window unit that “cools” the bedroom to approximately the same temperature as Dallas at dusk.

Our house in Philadelphia was built in the 1920s, when people were tough and resourceful. For most of the year, the house is cool and pleasant, as long as there isn’t a mash-up of continuously scorching days and epic humidity, when the air is putrid, stagnant and, if it were a color, would definitely be mustard.

Which would be this summer. Which, so far, is the fourth-hottest summer on record in the Washington area. Emphasis on so far. NASA reports that July was the Earth’s hottest in recorded history. Cheer up, people say to those of us without air conditioning, September’s coming. Except people forget that most of September is still summer.

Our electric company wants us to keep the AC at 78. Just no. Bet they do not keep the energy company’s offices at 78. It has to feel better inside than outside.

Several mistakes in that:
1. telling me what I need or don’t need.
2. saying that I don’t know that September is still summer.

I decide if I need air conditioning, not the Wapo.

Furthermore, many elderly people will die in the excessive heat. Maybe that’s what they want. After all they believe in euthanasia.

Sorry, Wapo, but you can go to hell where even you will need an air conditioner.

Liberal hippies like her are used to the stench of sweaty, unwashed bodies.

I have pets that cannot handle high heat. If someone wants to go without, good for them. If someone wants a medal for going without, they are an attention whore.

Years ago, I would try to delay turning on the a/c until the outside temp hit 90.

Now, the first sign of warm and I flip the switch for the a/c. No point in sweltering when one doesn’t have to.

People’s bodies vary in their ability to cool itself. Some individuals are heat tolerant (cool themselves well) and some are heat intolerant (don’t perspire enough, face gets red easily in heat, nauseated, can get heatstroke). So I don’t get the premise that the OP’s author should establish what the rest of humanity should do.

The same folks are either totally cool with hot weather affecting old people to the pount of death, or are the very same ones demanding govt give them free air conditioners.

We didn’t have air-conditioning until the early 70s. It was miserable! Sleepless nights, at least a dozen fans blowing throughout the house and my grandmother saying hopefully: “I think that’s an ocean breeze!” (She lived near Coney Island). Most of us sat around in a stupor until October.

checked for the A/C timeline. Apparently window units began in earnest in the 1950s and central A/C in the 1970s.

A few years ago, I purchased a small home built in 1957 with an attic exhaust fan. It was very efficient. Previous owners added Thermostat control which saved power. No window A/C units.

When I bought the home, I added central air. (wussie).

Hey Karen, give us your home address so we can come by and check on your allegation of “living without”.

Please don’t complain when someone would then deliver a crippling blow through the outdoor condenser unit of your central air with a heavy garden implement. That act would just be done in the spirit or correcting your printed lie.

Fifteen THOUSAND died in France in two weeks. The retirement homes now have A/C in at least one room....normally the dining room or other large room. The other problem was lack of staff and most people were on vacation and the skeleton staff were over burdened horrendously.

I was in San Antonio at that time. Daytime highs were above 100 the whole time. No, we didn’t NEED air conditioning. But we don’t need cooked meat or rolled toilet paper either. Those are all hallmarks of civilization, not important to barbarians or Luddites.

(WAPO Author) Karen Heller is national general features writer for Style.

She was previously a metro columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer, where she also reported on popular culture, politics and social issues.

IOW, a hypocritical professional instigator and propagandist for the Leftist cause.

Karen, sweety -- as you wrote for "Style," did you find your soggy sweat-stained blouse and greasy hair a deterrent to your own "Style" on the way to the office or at parties? Or did you merely use a half a stick of Ban Roll-On per day?

It is certainly true that yankees would never have infested Florida to the degree they have without AC.
