My only son is off to basic training for the Air Force. Adam is his name. He joined the 401st Reserve Airlift Squadron at Joint Base Charleston in SC late in his senior year in High School when he was only 17yo. He managed to get a loadmaster position on the C-17. He graduated high school with a life scholarship to any in state SC school. But he wanted to serve his country and pay his own way through school. He is a scratch golfer. He recently soloed a multi engine airplane. Loves to hunt and fish. He's a fine young man. He gives me hope for the future of this country.
He needs a college ed 1st.
They actually have airstream trailers they have set up as vip quarters. They roll them in and off they go.
I have met and worked with dozens of Active Duty USAF over the past few years. They are among the most incredible and honorable Americans I have ever met.
All the best to the kid but hero at this point in time is pushing it

With all due respect, that is wrong and short sighted.
I have two sons in the military. A Ranger & Graduate of West Points class of 2014 and a sophmore ROTC at VA Tech with a 4 year Army scholarship.
The military is what you make it - sure there are bad spots but quite frankly mid to large companies (or ngo’s) are even worse at brainwashing.
My sons haven’t been ridiculed for their faith and I have met through them wonderful, upright men and women that gives me great hope.
The only hope for the military and the future is that fine young men and women join.

May he serve under a good Commander in Chief and if he must go to war, may it be a just war. May he serve safely.

I hear ya Matt. But he was determined to serve. When he first brought it up he was looking at being Marine infantry. I gently suggested he look at the reserves in Charleston. Best mission, best (enlisted) job, best location, best unit in the world. Best way to a pilot slot too. Probably not as good as it was in our day, but still good. His part time college job will be to fly all over the world wearing his flt suit.
Fine young man, you did good... and he will too.

if you’ve never been involved with the AF you would never know that a Loadmaster is like god on an cargo aircraft. It never moves until he, or she, has verified that the load is properly secured and configured. Weight and balance in an airplane is everything.

As a former airman myself, let me say he'll fit right in.
Good for him, you should be very proud! I know things have changed since I was in, 68-72, but back then some enlisted guys were being sent to Officer Candidate School bypassing the Academy and traditional Bachelors degree schools. Sounds like he’s on top of things and will go far. Congrats!!!
