The Operator Model tactical brass recovery system from TBR really works.
Lew Grasser is a Marine Corps veteran who owns and operates Tactical Brass Recovery (TBR) in New Salisbury, Ind. Hes spent a lot of time watching spent cases eject from AR-platform rifles, AK-47s, SCARs and even TAVOR bullpups and tactical shotguns.
He has tested scores of rifles and ammunition types and recorded the results, noting what is consistent, what is variable and what is bizarrely rare. Hes even made high-speed video recordings of ejecting cases so he can study their movements in slow motion.
Hes done all this research to design and build the brass catcher he wished he had during his active-duty days. The TBR Operator Model is the culmination of years of research and experimentation, and is far and away the best designed and most practical brass catcher I have ever seen.
The Operator Model retails for $220, which may seem like a lot of money. However, in testing I found its features were exceptional. For one thing, it actually catches the brass. I dont mean some of the brass. I mean it catches all of the brass, and not just a magazines worth. Read the rest of the story here.
I like that mount and the quick release.
yeah, yeah...they always want more
Picking up pistol brass is the bain of my shooting life. I don’t shoot my semi auto pistols much because of that because it drives me crazy to not end up with 50 empties at the end of the session. Yeah, I know - anal.
You can just jimmy rig a bag to the side. Like you need an expensive catch.
A portable rig like that wouldn’t be too hard to make using fiberglass poles like pop-up tents have. Might cause some problems on a windy day though when it sails into the shooters next to you.
It would probably need one or two poles in back as braces anyway and those could have loops at the bottom for tent stakes. Or weights clipped to those loops for concrete shooting platforms.
We’ve almost got a product here!
I just threw out a 10’x10’ canopy in my garbage pile. I wanted something for the rain and figured the “sun shade” I bought was the same as the others I have bought (and destroyed by the wind).
I open it up - it was a heavy mesh at the top to let the air flow, but still provided some shade. But it still left a lot of sun through. It was worthless. Or so I had thought!
Darn! I hate when I do that! lol
Was the mesh tight enough to catch a small case like 9mm?
It was tighter than a bug screen on a screen door. (I was trying to think of a funny euphemism, but....)
Here’s a link to a similar fabric: 6’x8’ for $22.

Depends on how you look at it.
I've seen several variations on homemade ones (made one for myself) and there are commercial models available.
That’s nice and the price isn’t bad. I was thinking a mesh that tight wouldn’t let air pass through easily. Guess I’m overthinking that. That would catch .22 rimfire which covers the gamut.
Go steel for practice.
