BOSTON (AP) — A prominent Irishman who lived illegally in Boston for years has been deported, closing a case that has generated fear and anxiety within the state’s sizeable Irish expat community.

John Cunningham returned to Ireland on Wednesday night, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed on Thursday. The 38-year old electrical contractor had been in custody since he was arrested at his home on June 16.

Federal immigration officials have said Cunningham represented an ‘‘enforcement priority’’ because he overstayed a 90-day visa by more than a decade....

If you drove without a driver’s license for a decade (I know someone who did, longer than that)... and the police stopped you for a headlight out and asked for your license.. would the police say it’s okay... ‘you’ve driven that long without a license, you know how to drive, you probably have a family to drive to and from, and you have a job to get to every day... just stay safe out there’...

Watching my wife earn her citizenship, I came to realize that this country practically gives it to anyone who isn't a criminal and is willing to pay the $745 filing fee and fill out the paperwork.

It is really not a complicated process.

As such, I have come to be even less sympathetic to the plight of illegals who can't be bothered with trying to do things the right way.

True but this case does show what is wrong with the priorities that drive our immigration policies.

This is the kind of immigrant we should have. Someone who brings talents, skills and drive to succeed to our country.

This is a man from an English-speaking country that shares our Anglo-Saxons values. He is someone that can easily assimilate in to the American society.

But no our immigration priorities are to bring in to the country immigrants that do not speak English, do not come from European countries that have traditions of freedom, to bring people can not easily assimilate and to bring people that do not have useful skills.

What kind of logic drives our immigration policy? You get one guess.
