What Would Really Happen If California Seceded?

There are two kinds of people who support the Calexit movement. People living in California who think that their state would be far better off without being hitched to the rest of the union, and people living in every other state who can’t wait to get rid of California.

I’d wager that latter of those two know something that most Calexit supporters in California do not. They know that the golden state is a toxic influence on the rest of the country. It’s become a breeding ground for leftists ideologies, and the people who believe those ideologies have run the state into the ground. As California slips further into debt and the cost of living mounts, those people are moving away to states where there are more opportunities.

But rather than abandoning the beliefs that turned their previous home into an expensive bureaucratic hellhole, they often vote and behave just like they did in California. They turn cities in conservative states into bastions leftist deterioration… little microcosms of where they came from.

That’s why it’s pretty obvious that if California really did secede from the United States, it wouldn’t suddenly be unshackled from the rest of the country. The state wouldn’t become some beacon of progressive values and prosperity. Without the balancing influence of the rest of the country, which keeps California in check to some degree, everything wrong with the state would be amplified. Rather than being free to pursue some grand destiny, California would only be free to pursue the same wrongheaded policies that have driven it towards such a stark, downward trajectory.

That fact was on display recently, when Calexit leader Shankar Singam went on Tucker Carlson Tonight. During the interview, Tucker challenged the notion that California would be able to manage itself properly. He brought up the fact that hundreds of thousands of upper and middle class people have left the state in recent years, which to any sane person would be an indication that their government is doing something terribly wrong to drive these people away.

Singam would beg to differ. He admitted, without any coaxing, that this wave of fleeing middle class Californians is a good thing, because it makes room for more immigrants, and helps spread Californian ideals to the rest of the country.

You heard that correctly. He thinks it’s good to push out productive citizens and replace them low skilled migrants.

It’s obvious what would happen if California became it’s own country. The middle class would be hollowed out. It would immediately turn into a banana republic, where you are either a wealthy elitist or an impoverished peasant who is dependent on the state. Though it wouldn’t be in California’s best interest to secede, it’s apparent that America can’t get rid of this cesspool fast enough.

It seems California would need to pay their share of the national debt as it exits. That would be up to 12% based on percentage of population. 12% of 20 trillion is 2.4 trillion.

I think by sending Liberal Senators and Representatives to Washington every year, they are responsible for a lot more of the debt than just their population's share.

How much did it cost us when their Liberal Senators voted for Obamacare?

What happened the last time that was tried?!

Well, the people who were paying 75% of the cost of Running the Federal government had the Sh*t beaten out of them by the other 75% of the Union that wasn't previously paying that tax bill.

Of course they had to pay their own tax bill after that, and we got this huge gargantuan Federal government as a result of empowering Washington DC.

Broke and deep in debt country of California will take chinese money for a bailout in exchange for allowing chinese nukes placed in California. The Cal border is long and will be expensive to secure. Cal has no problem with aiding and abetting anti-US adversaries and letting them set up shop along their border with the USA.

Do you think Trump would let this happen? Wouldn’t he love to invade and occupy California and appoint a Governor of the Territory of California? Would liberals die to defend Hollywood or San Francisco? This was tried in 1861 and lots of folks died. This is a bad joke—a Never Trumper Fantasy.

The damn liberal idiots in California are pissing in the wind with this one. They can stand around all day long beating their heads against the wall because Trump won but these stupid shit sandwiches they are making won’t be eaten by anyone.

That's an old map. Fresno, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Merced counties all went for Clinton last time.

I don't think California's going to secede, but if it did, a lot of people would simply leave the sparsely populated inland counties for the US, rather than fight it out.

They'd probably be replaced by settlers from the cities who'd support the secession and hold on to the water for SF and LA.

Getting rid of 17A would help put a major dent in not only putting a stop to unconstitutional federal taxes, taxes that Congress cannot justify under its Article I, Section 8-limited powers, but also putting a stop to unconstitutional federal government interference in the affairs of the sovereign states.

"Unconstitutional federal taxes" were made constitutional by the 16th Amendment. That may be what your quarrel is with -- the graduated federal income tax.

The 17th Amendment is direct election of senators. Nobody's going to get rid of that and it wouldn't change much if they did.

I know California will never secede, but if the vote to secede were to ever happen, the federal government should gather a list of those that voted to secede.

So, in case secession actually were to occur, we would have the list of those that voted to become another country, and as such, they would be termed “foreigners” and not allowed to cross over to the rest of the states.

That would be a good way to deter Californians from seceding and then looking to get back into the U.S. after their experiment to secede fails. You make that big of a mistake, you should pay the consequences. We would be rid of the traitors and their attempts to bring back into the country their putrid ideology.

As soon as most of California’s producers/tax payers have left, the entitled refugees will flood into the rest of the country demanding the same bennies everywhere they land. The only way to stop that mindset is to shoot them.

a few years ago a guy drove an 18 wheeler into the capital building in Sacramento. unfortunately the truck was not full of explosives and the legislature was not in session. if you do that you don’t have to kill all the illegals. They will leave. Just kidding of course.

Maybe it would simply turn into an excuse to purge leftists? I mean, their government would be less capable than Mexico. There would already be ample right wing militia. I’d like to see the coastline swept clean. A year or two later we could welcome them back to the union. It’d be like a leper who’d been cured.

Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside county are shown in red here. Old map. Those counties went heavily for Hillary. Just like former Republican stongholds San Diego, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties.

Millions and millions of conservatives and semi-conservatives would leave (if California would allow it).

It wouldn’t be just California either. Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii would join them and cut off the United State’s access to the Pacific Ocean. So, be careful what you ask for.

How about the people who don’t want to secede and don’t want to leave? Think they are going to just let it happen without a fight?

I am in favor of anything that reduces the number of leftards from Dumbfuckistan invading the sacred soil of Texas. up to and including lethal force. I lived in Austin when the dotcommies swarmed over the border and bid up the price of housing because they couldn’t understand why it was so “cheap”. I say, put a bounty on them like we used to have on coyotes, $50 an ear.
