ISIS triples down on claims of responsibility for attack, FBI says no evidence of terror connection

ISIS claimed credit for the attack in Las Vegas Monday, however, an FBI agent involved in the investigation said there is no evidence of a connection to terrorism at this point. NY Times correspondent Rukmini Callimachi says it’s not true that ISIS claims responsibility for every attack, but she has her doubts about the accuracy of this claim:

Rita Katz, Director of SITE Intelligence Group, also has a thread on the ISIS claim. She says ISIS is doubling down on this claim but still providing no evidence:

So ISIS is definitely claiming this but still offering nothing in the way of proof. The translation of the most recent statement is behind SITE’s paywall but it appears they are claiming this was inspired by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s call for more attacks made in an audio statement released last week. This was the first time in 10 months that anyone had heard from Baghdadi.

At the Atlantic, author Graeme Wood also says ISIS does not claim credit for every attack. However, he notes that the group recently made similar claims of responsibility for another attack which appears to have been a lie:

They have offered no evidence—no cell-phone video from the killer, pledging allegiance in broken Arabic; no selfies of him, raising a finger of monotheism. Another absent sign of Islamic State involvement is videos from Paddock’s rifle-scope. At attacks like the Holey Bakery in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the killers have uploaded real-time images, exclusive and corroborating imagery for Amaq. As with many subsequently verified attacks, we have not yet, in these early hours, seen any such evidence.

If their claim is a rare false one, it will not even be the first false claim to feature a casino. In June, a gambling addict shot up and torched the Resorts World casino in Manila, Philippines. The Islamic State claimed credit, with a dubious follow-up alleging that Jessie Javier Carlos, 42, converted to Islam some months before, without telling anyone. That explanation appears to be a total lie. A false claim of credit in Las Vegas will effectively shred the Islamic State’s news agency’s credibility. It will become a news agency that was once reliable, and now associates itself indiscriminately with heavily armed crazy people in casinos.

However, FBI Special Agent Aaron Rouse said at a press conference today that there is no evidence “to this point” the shooter had a connection to terrorism.

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)

The police have searched the shooter’s home but Sherriff Joseph Lombardo said he was “not aware of any derogatory information that we can utilize in furtherance of the investigation at this point.”

When someone commits an act with a terrorist motivation, they usually want the world to know. Omar Mateen, the Pulse nightclub shooter, made 911 calls in which he pledged allegiance to ISIS, knowing those calls would be recorded and, eventually, shared. So if this really is ISIS-inspired it seems odd that Paddock didn’t leave a note or a video or something making clear his motive. Maybe something will turn up but so far ISIS’ claim is unsupported.

I hope the automatic weapons the shooter had prove to have come from the stream of autos smuggled into the US from the Philippines with the connivance of that San Fran Demwit politician. Thanks 2ndDivisionVet.

i was just listening to the John Batchelor show who mentioned the news agency Amas (?) has given credit to ISIS for the Vegas murders three times the past hour and its evidently burning up the isis sites- whatever they are...

Batchelor went on to say this news agency does not just put BS out there and while they are wrong on occasion they are scary right on the mark most of the time...

Batchelor seemed to think its a very real possibility isis was behind this for a number of reasons 1- no suicide note from shooter 2- patterned after recent isis attacks in france and manchester...

Well, I can only think of one answer.

We know from recent history that mass murders are not limited to ISIS. Columbine was not ISIS. We have had several such cases. The guy's father was on the FBI's most wanted list. Bad DNA can produce a sick SOB.

It is in the interest of police administrators to declare that such investigations in their jurisdictions are all wrapped up, with or without a full body of evidence and with nothing further to add (e.g., the husband did it).

The press and FBI quickly jump to conclusions if they feel a killer is a conservative... same with hoaxes against conservatives before they're debunked. The press always buys them... KKK at Oberlin - every damn silly one... but they don't 'buy into' hoaxes that make liberals look bad. They're careful with liberals.

So I'm betting the monster's a liberal... That's why it's taking so long - - the monster must be a white liberal elite... The press and FBI want to give him every benefit of the doubt...

There was a picture that was posted earlier with a younger man ISIS was claiming was this guy. It’s not him. But apparently ISIS is so pathetic, they need to latch onto anything these days.

Hope the feds track down who this younger guy is.

By all accounts, ISIS rarely claims credit for terrorist acts that they weren't actually behind. It's odd that they would keep claiming credit for this one - if this guy Paddock was a recent convert to Islam and had pledged himself to ISIS, ISIS should be releasing a video of him proclaiming his allegiance to them soon.

But until I see it, all I can assume is that he acted on his own.

Easy access with a high vantage point overlooking a target rich environment ensuring maximum carnage. I think he was a deeply troubled person with serious issues that will come out that triggered him to snap like a twig in a hurricane. Proof that wealth is not necessarily the key to happiness.

The FBI couldn’t find an Islamic jihad connection to the Tsarnaev brothers either until they were left with no other choice.

Most mass murderers are liberal. That is because liberals already have diseased minds, so they are more likely to go over the edge, so to speak. Add to that the surge in conversions to Islam by liberals (following the lead of the life-long muzzy who usurped the White House for 8 years, and well-known converts like Al Gore, the Clintons, and Al Franken), and it’s a toxic mix.

ISI is more credible than the FBI.

I never thought I would write words like that in my lifetime.

Don’t they have to do the byatt thing where they pledge allegiance to Isis the moon God and what not? Otherwise no virgins? Perhaps he made a call we aren’t being told about our has been discovered. Doesn’t seem Isis seems more like Democrat inspired anti trump terrorism. This is all speculation on my part

Did anyone else catch the caller on Rush's show, who said that investigators have been able to rule out ISIS within hours of the shootings, yet more than 8 months into President Trump's first term, they still haven't been able to find any proof of collusion with Russia?

Yep, I heard that caller. Completely destroyed any "credibility" the FBI may have had with that statement right there.
