When the foam rubber in your seat is like a brick because it is so cold it is not better to start cold.

A friend (in Albuquerque) had his
vehicle stolen while it was idling
in his garage. The cops found it
over 300 miles away. The thieves
trashed it.
About a year before, while visiting
the same friend, I had a 1985 Mustang
GT convertible stolen from his driveway.
(It was parked, locked, and not running)
The cops found it about 20 miles away
stripped of its drive train.
I just recently read somewhere that
Albuquerque is now #1 in the US for
vehicle theft.
After having lived in Minnesota,
starting and warming up the car is
a practice that, at -20, is worth
the risk of having one’s car stolen.
Scraping windows sucks...

Ummm..... It does warm up the car, on the inside anyway. I’m not getting in until 75f has been attained.

Even if I have the doors locked with my remote? What difference does it make if the engine is running, they still had to “break and enter” to ‘steal” it?

People who ‘care’ will freeze their ‘junk’ off to SEND A MESSAGE to the rest of us, who want to be comfortable. The other 99% will continue warming their vehicles.

“I remember a study showing that this almost does not help with warming up the car and that it would be better to start driving cold.”

Depends on your situation, but cars will warm up MUCH FASTER if they’re driven at a rate above stop-and-go, as opposed to sitting around doing nothing So I generally agree - punch the gas, even on a minor road, and the car will quickly heat up.
