I wonder if Eva Wiseman of GQ could explain to us how these things could have happened. She seems to be pretty astute sociologically.
Whenever someone tells me they are a socialist, I ask if they are an International Socialist or a National Socialist.
I do the same thing. NAZI = National socialist workers Party I also say USSR = Union of Soviet socialist Republics.
Another tidbit: During WW II, Stalin and his crowd never asked their people to fight for Communism. They always said defend and fight for “Mother Russia”. Then when the war was over they went back to mentioning Communism.
Stalin was no dummy! he obviously has seen what the Nazis did to the commies in Bavaria and wanted no part of that!
Stalin helped Hitler to kill German Communists. He didn’t want a strong German Communist Party, since he saw them as an ultimate threat to the Kremlin’s domination of the International Communist movement.

Yep. And here’s another tidbit: The Soviets always called their German enemies “fascists”, and never “Nazis”. The Soviets didn’t want to highlight the fact that the Nazi Germans were fellow socialists.
Some wag once remarked that the Nazis were just socialists dressed up in fancy uniforms. That sounds about right.
True, but the main reason Stalin didn’t want to equate the German Socialism with the Soviet Socialism which were very close. It was a devious play on words. Besides, the Russian people suffering under Soviet Communism didn’t need reminders on the evil they were fighting for. Thus, “Mother Russia”.

The reason Hitler first infiltrated the German Workers party as an undercover cop, was because his boss thought they might be Communists. Economically they were, but they thought the Proletariat revolution would come through German Supremacy, with all others subordinate to them.

It was a real revelation for me when I first read it. And he was a contemporaneous observer of the Nazi - Communist clashes in the late 1920s and 1930s.
I always thought the “Nazis are right wing” mantra from our Left was nonsense, but Hayek really put it together.
An example of how wicked the average human heart can be given the right circumstances.
