I see an awful lot of Dewalt on jobsites.
Probably more than any single other brand.

Speaking of Taiwan, Harbor Freight carries a line of hand tools made in Taiwan that are really good for the money. Their regular “Pittsburg” line is made in China and kind of junky but the Pittsburg PRO series is Taiwan made and probably roughly on par with modern Craftsman tools.

Most excellent for welding slag. Also, they’re good for knocking off rust in corners where you cannot grind, for rough spots and for destroying your ears and really annoying the hell out of everyone in the shop.

Thanks for your hard work. Went aboard 30 years ago for a look - pretty impressive. Must have been something to have served aboard her.

My sentiments exactly...Pick up any of the “American” brands and roll ‘em over...There it is, the “Made in China” label...About the same quality and durability as the HF cousin at twice the price...IMHO, HF hand tools (sockets, ratchets, etc) are very good, especially for the $...

Be willing to bet he is Genius and Educated. (and very Experienced)
You on the other hand are Experience Deficient and a Tad Judgemental.
I have chipped acres of paint and non-skid with a Needle Gun I guess I didn’t get the Memo when Ignacikat re-purposed and re-defined and Trademarked the Standard Needle Gun.

I needed to remove very shiny old white enamel paint from our fireplace so I could glue on stone. The paint was real hard and a test of a sandblaster found that it would cut a hole in one spot in the brick, then proceed to undercut the soft brick under the paint layer. In the end, I would have had a shell of hard white enamel pain and no brick underneath.

This HF needle scaler did the job. I put a plastic tent over the work area and went to town on the paint. I was able to get the job done fairly quickly and the mortar holding on the new stone veneer stuck perfectly to the underlying brick.

Used the tool for that one job, put it away, and haven’t touched it again in ten years. When I croak and the kids are cleaning out my lifetime of junk, they are going to look at it and ask “What the hell is this thing?”

Don’t forget their Chicago Electric line. Yeah, I frequent Harbor Freight, too. I got a pressure washer from them a few years back. It ran for about 20 minutes, then it blew the seal on the pump motor. I took it apart, and one of the bolts at the coupling sheared clean off. I used a bolt extractor bit in my drill and backed it out, put in a new one, and it runs like a champ to this day. Their products can be hit-or-miss sometimes, but they get the job done and are good for the money, if you’re not using them as heavy duty professional or industrial tools. About the same quality as the Hyper Tough tools Walmart sells. All of it probably coming from the same plants in China that manufacture Campbell Hausfield and Porter Cable hardware. Not a dime’s worth of difference in looks or reliability.

I use my power tools quite a bit. I have a good used Makita miter saw that I bought 20 + years ago for $75.00, I have abused the crap out of it and it still keeps going. I recommend looking for good high-end tools at pawn shops. I have bought good stuff below Harbor Freight prices many times.

I first used a scaler/needle gun as a a 3rd class midshipman back in summer 1975 on the deck of the USS Schenectady, LST 1175. Learned lessons I've applied many, many time scaling first rust all week on my hands and knees.

Still appropriate to remove loose scale and weld debris and weld slag. Be careful though, the needle tips drive paint INTO the metal surface - It's NOT clean enough for TIG welding after a needle gun, but the SMAW (stick) welding rods burn hotter and can give a you an acceptable weld thereafter.

Well, before I even look at the vid, I will say that ALL Harbor Freight crap is just that...crap.

Even their "disposable/consumable" items are crap, as in their sandpapers, drill bits, cut-off wheels, etc.

Harbor Freight does not get my business, period.

Cheap Chinese JUNK, poorly manufactured, not worthy of piling up and burning for heat.

I know what you are talking about. Some factory in Taiwan is turning out very good quality mid priced hand tools. You will see their same ratchets sold under several name brands including Stanley.

Now Chinese tools are all over the place. Some are about as bad as it gets but some are OK. They seem to be at their best with precision measuring tools. I have several inexpensive Chinese micrometers which I really like. I particularly like the clutch which seems better than more expensive ones.

Remove paint at an angle. Don’t drive it directly into the surface. If it’s a weld surface media blast it. We’re limited by National Monument regulations on what we can do for restoration.

Yup. AvE is entertaining and the presenter, is knowledgeable in electronics, metallurgy, and plastics. Got hooked on his vids when I watched one where he dissected an antique Sawzall.

This is why I have DeWalt.

When the guy I hire shows up with his rear end dragging and claims he can't start working because his battery isn't charged, or he left his battery home, I just hand him one of mine and say "get started."

AvE is a millright by profession, though he has never said outright in his videos. He is too well rounded to be anything else. He is in a class unto themselves, what the industry calls a roadwhore, someone who travels from one outage/shutdown/turnaround to the next.

He is from Canada, but works the world. I have never bumped into him on a job, But he is known in the industry, he does mines, paper mills etc.

Millrights are divided into two groups, those who can get stuff done no matter what with whatever is on hand, and guys taking up space. He is not the latter.

Guys like him are getting more and more rare all the time, specially when 40 and under. Goes for all the crafts, in all the industries.
